What an amazing meeting with KOLs from pharma industry! We were happy to discuss and explore ways of enabling #multiomics biomarker discovery 👏🧬💪 I wanted to share some of my thoughts. Halozyme knocks on door of Evotec with $2 Bn, Evotec doesn't answer. So Halozyme tells the world about it. Highly unusual for a company to broadcast an offer publicly as a statement letter, just because no one at the target company is willing to engage in a private discussion. Now the offer has been withdrawn by Halozyme, what did Evotec miss? As a publicly traded company, Evotec's board, which holds fiduciary responsibility, will need to justify to shareholders why they refused to consider a $2 Bn offer for their company that is worth $1.5 Bn or 33% premium. Halozyme up 15%, Evotec down 18%. Interesting open letter from Halozyme about this event.

I'm very proud of Alejandro Piedrabuena Díaz for achieving the highest mark on his master's thesis dissertation: "Search, Fractionation, and Biological Evaluation of Fungicidal Compounds from Betula pendula Extracts: A Hybrid Approach Combining Bio-Guidance and Artificial Intelligence." Although he learned a lot about natural products chemistry and biofungicide development, I feel that I received much more than I gave. This experience as the director of an applied research project taught me skills that are not included in university teaching plans. Competences such as patience, empathy, and adaptability were the greatest lessons I have learned from this fruitful experience and are sure to play an important role in the challenges to come. We recently sat down with Dr. George Wang, Vice President of Discovery and Preclinical Services at WuXi Biologics to discuss the importance of looking at developability of an antibody early in the drug discovery process. In the podcast, The Importance of Evaluating Developability in the Antibody Discovery Stage, Dr. Wang defines developability and its significance in achieving scalable production during CMC development, which is essential for large-scale manufacturing before clinical trials. He emphasizes the importance of identifying and addressing developability concerns early in the discovery stage to mitigate risks and ensure cost-effective development. Dr. Wang provides examples where developability studies have helped prevent unforeseen costs and timeline disruptions during biologics discovery and preclinical development phases. I am incredibly proud to announce that we have been awarded a £1.6M project from Innovate UK’s Biomedical Catalyst 2023 Round 2: Industry-led R&D 🙌 This application took a tremendous amount of effort, including working well into the early hours of many mornings to perfect the initial submission and cancelling leave over Christmas to prepare for the interview stage. Innovate UK grants (rightly!) require significant work; the application is scrutinised by five experienced assessors from various areas across Life Sciences. The next-stage interview is then attended by up to ten other people, with our panel including professionals from the NHS, academia, and CDMOs, among others. With a pot of £17.8M, and average project cost at £415,191, only 30 of the 358 applications could be funded 💰 . It is therefore truly gratifying to have so many experts agree that the cause we are developing solutions for is important and worthy of this substantial investment ✊ We do not take this funding lightly and will work tirelessly to ensure the success of our exciting project.
