During my time as a public relations consultant for small businesses, I've often found myself explaining this crucial aspect of the industry: you can't force writers and editors to feature your story. Instead, it's about providing them with the right information and aligning with their timelines. Success in PR is a delicate tango of pitching the right information at the right time, which requires a deep understanding of both the media landscape and the needs of the journalists. I agree! Ultimately, it's about crafting compelling narratives that resonate and capture their interest.

I love what I do, but there are some things you really shouldn’t hire me for. JFDI tasks where thinking and listening isn’t asked for or expected. Scenarios where PR is made to sit in the corner and only speak when spoken too. Supporting the ‘all publicity is good publicity’ delusion. Not everyone is a celebrity with a redemption story to use…. Thoughts on what colour to wear other than black, how physics ‘happens’, or how the LI algorithm actually works What you can absolutely hire me for, whether a brand, business or agency, is: Comms strategy and clarity that makes sense of all the threads you are trying to tie into one Honest appraisal, review, fixing or retooling of your story, messages, narrative and place. Board level advice or mentoring, positive challenge, fractional support, and helping with the stuff that otherwise keeps you awake at night. Opinions and an experienced view of what works brilliantly in PR and what crashes and burns like an overconfident ‘what rain?’ strategy The thinking time you know you don’t have for big tasks, live projects or the crucial things currently gathering dust. Fashion advice can be offered if you insist, but the honest answer will probably still be ’wear black’ The surgery is open and I’m here to listen….: )

Following a number of inquisitive emails, It's time to announce my departure from the podcast I co-founded with the PRCA. Fuse from the PRCA was conceived to present audio content in bite-sized chunks, allowing listeners to consume it conveniently at their leisure. Sir Martin Sorrell was our inaugural guest, and even then, the demand for longer video was apparent. As a result, after a single episode, we broadened the production to encompass multiple formats. I am deeply indebted to the late Francis Ingham for his acceptance of my proposal and for facilitating the formal collaboration that brought Fuse to life. To Michael Collins, Koray Camgöz, Farzana Baduel, David Olajide MPRCA, Richard Fernandez, and Ayesha Haniff, your commitment has been instrumental in constructing a storytelling platform that authentically conveys the realities of our industry, celebrates achievements, and most importantly, underscores the human beings behind campaigns. I wish Curzon PR and PRCA continued success with Fuse. With newfound space in my schedule and, for the first time since 1997, no media content production to oversee, there are new stories to be told. Part-time, moving forward what is next? Talk radio, books, podcasts – who knows? 3 things I'd never do as a journalist 👇 1/ Negative Bias: I never let personal opinions cloud my reporting. Journalism should be fair and unbiased, focusing on facts rather than personal views. 2/ Adding My Words: It's necessary to stick to the truth. I won't twist stories or add my own spin to sensationalise or mislead readers. 3/ Using mistrustful sources: : Trustworthy sources are everything. I'll never compromise on using credible, verified information to ensure accuracy and integrity in my work. What values do you prioritise in your field? I couldn't be happier today for the #LGBTQ population and Spencer Macnaughton and his team. In a time when corporate media, as well-intentioned as it is, goes out of its way to give voice to falsehoods, slurs and misinformation about the issues facing LGBTQ people, Uncloseted Media launched today, right on schedule. According to founder and award winning journalist Macnaughton, "What can you expect from Uncloseted? Well, every week we will publish rigorous, nonpartisan, objective LGBTQ focused journalism. Our mission is to investigate the people, the money, and the power behind America’s anti-LGBTQ ecosystem, and simultaneously elevate the voices of everyday heroes. Our aim is to be a publication for the LGBTQ community but also to break out of the queer echo chamber so we can bring critically important stories to Americans in every county in all 50 states." We need this in an era where we are called "filth" by "credible" candidates running for important positions like Governor of North Carolina and elected officials use that term in Oklahoma to talk about their goal to rid the state of us. And when major US-based companies we have supported like Lowe's Companies, Inc., Ford Motor Company and John Deere turn their back to us and turn forward to a conservative influencer who they are afraid of. As many of you may be aware of, the media industry has been struggling for a while now for financial as well as ethical and cultural reasons. This piece by Wesley Lowery breaks down some of the issues that we see today and how they were dealt with in the industry in the past. This was very insightful to me so sharing here for anyone who follows media as a business as well: "The path to better journalism is clear: we must construct an industry that reflects the diversity of our nation, articulate and live by clear values, deploy diligent journalistic methods, and construct a financial model that can insulate those values and methods from the demands of capitalism. But rather than commit themselves to this work, too many industry gatekeepers spend their time slaying straw men, shouting in passionate defense of principles that are not in fact under dispute. The latest 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Black' survey from UK Black Comms Network (supported by Opinium and PRWeek UK) is a stark reminder of the continued need for creating more inclusive and equitable workplaces. Overlooked for promotions and awards, experiencing microaggressions and racism, while feeling like they have to tone down their personalities to 'fit in'. No wonder two thirds of Black PR pros consider leaving the industry. As Kamiqua Lake (nèe Pearce) says "For an industry that prides itself on being able to engage, influence and understand people - we have no excuses for not doing better on inclusion." 🎯 I encourage you to: - Read the report. Then read it again and think about how your company can be different - Speak and listen to your Black employees - Ask yourself what you could do better As a process lover, I'd also suggest you: - Check your promotion and retention data. Who is leaving, when and why? Who is being promoted and why (not)? - Review and set clear promotion criteria. Agencies in particular are historically bad at promoting the loudest or popular voices or those that fit a certain image. Make it super clear what someone needs to achieve to get to the next level - What policies do/should you have in place and are they being acted upon? No point having something on paper if people don't know it exists or feel like they can refer to it - Look at how you can provide mentoring and sponsorship for your Black talent. If it isn't available in-house, look externally - Review your training and development offer. Yes, the EDI related training, but also ensure that people are being given the tools and skills they need to excel in their job. Over two-thirds (68%) of Black professionals in the PR industry have considered leaving their roles. While 14% of Black talent received a pay rise, only 6% were promoted. 📉 It's disheartening that many Black communications professionals are not surprised by the findings from the UK Black Comms Network 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Black' report. I also reached a point in my career where I questioned if communications was the right path for me, feeling overlooked and experiencing other unfortunate situations. Luckily I no longer feel this way anymore! It's a shame that so many Black PR professionals face similar, if not worse, challenges. These experiences underscore the urgent need for action to improve the career experiences of Black professionals in the PR and communications sector. This responsibility shouldn't fall solely on HR and diversity and inclusion teams. Organisations and agencies must hold themselves accountable and drive meaningful change.🙌🏾 Read the full report here:

After a couple of years of research and consultation, the new CAP guidelines on podcast advertising are here... https://lnkd.in/eak3XU_a Set to fully take effect from 16th August, all advertising communications within a podcast must now feature clear signposting to make them obviously identifiable as such. The ASA suggests the use of terms such as 'This is an advertisement for...' or 'our sponsor today is...', although it's not an exhaustive list and they will take into account the full context of an ad when considering if it has breached the code. Sound effects and clearly marked breaks from the main content are also suggested as ways to clearly distinguish commercial content from editorial. Interestingly, for video podcasters, it highlights the need to ensure that host reads included within the video version of a podcast should adhere to the relevant CAP guidelines for that medium. How have you been handling commercial signposting until now? Does this actually change anything?

Comms Unplugged has become a staple part of my annual CPD, not least because they manage to get some amazing speakers who aren't doing the circuit of every other comms conference. And the unique learning environment - nature, basically, the rich Dorset countryside - means you actually retain that learning, it hasn't frazzled out of your brain on the train home. But there is so much more about that little field of dreams. So many things I look back on with pride that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't taken a chance on doing something a bit different in the first place: 👩‍🎓 I would not have got #chartered or taken my Level 7 in Crisis Comms 👑 I would not have got an interim position with the eternally fabulous Louisa D., which then led to me working on two Royal funerals and a birthday. 👩‍💼 Without Louisa's support (and the odd good natured kick up the proverbial), I would not be in the role I am now in 🤝 I would not have met the talented and supportive Dan Holden, and had his wonderful mentorship that has had such an impact on me 🎨 I would not have sent Alan Oram and his amazing team at Alive With Ideas an RFP for our new brand - and just look at what we did together! 📔 Even my contribution to Rachel Miller's wonderful book has its roots in that little corner of Dorset 🤗 I would not have the wonderful network of colleagues and friends that I have, that support me daily and share their own skills, worries, thoughts and achievements. You know who you are. And it's not been all take - I've been able to touch other people's lives and careers too, but that's their story to tell. So why not give #CommsUnplugged a go? The least that will happen is you have a fun weekend camping in a beautiful part of the world with great food and great people, and you will have some great #CommsLearning and #CPD. I came across this post and couldn't agree more. The idea of "placing" media doesn't and shouldn't exist. Effective media relations are about building relationships, understanding journalists' needs, and delivering compelling stories. It's a strategic process that requires skill, persistence, and a deep understanding of our audience. If we place media in a way that lacks authenticity, the company and brand might as well pay for advertising. Let's continue to advocate for authentic and impactful communication strategies.
