In 2024, job seekers in the UK face several challenges, despite some positive developments. While the job market remains tight, with sectors like healthcare, education, and engineering experiencing skill shortages, overall vacancy rates are declining. For example, vacancies dropped to around 889,000 by mid-2024, compared to previous highs. Graduates in particular continue to find better opportunities in specialized sectors like pharmaceuticals, finance, and aerospace, though competition remains tough, especially for non-graduate roles in retail and services. Remote and hybrid work options, popular during the pandemic, are decreasing slightly, with fewer job postings offering flexibility, especially in sectors like tech. However, employers in finance and legal services are still more open to these models. The economic slowdown, coupled with workforce gaps caused by immigration policies and an aging population, is making it harder for businesses to hire, despite efforts to boost employment through wage growth and training programs. This was followed by 13% who pointed to the variety of work and projects, and another 13% who were concerned about additional responsibilities.     To address these challenges, here are a few things to remember!   1️⃣ Think about the perks! Permanent roles come with stuff like health benefits, paid time off, and job security. You won't have to stress about where the next gig is coming from. Plus, many companies are pretty chilled these days and offer flexible hours or remote work options too.     2️⃣ I know you're worried about losing that sweet work-life balance. But honestly, a lot of companies value that now more than ever. You can usually negotiate your hours or work from home a couple of days a week. It's all about finding the right fit.     3️⃣ Think about the long game. Permanent roles often come with chances for growth and promotions. You can build a career and still have a life. Plus, having a steady gig means you can plan vacations and personal time better since you're not always hunting for the next contract. What does the UK Life Sciences sector need to change to become more competitive on the global stage and to once again be considered as a commercially attractive market for the launch of new products?     On Dec 5th Carrot Recruitment is hosting a round table discussion at our Pall Mall office in London. It will be a discussion around the widely held perception that the UK at present is not the most commercially attractive market to launch in, particularly for small firms and new entrants to the UK.   Participants will represent a range of Pharma, Biotech and MedTech organisations with mainly UK / European market responsibilities within their own remits.   In order to answer the question of how the UK Life Science sector can become more commercially attractive, there are a number of areas to explore. The impact of VPAG and other ‘innovative’ reimbursement models; the potential impact (or opportunity) of the forthcoming European Joint Clinical Assessment on the UK market; the role of RWD in the approval processes; and indeed, we shall explore the effectiveness of key bodies such as NICE, DHSC, NHS, APBI, MHRA and whether more efficient collaboration could be achieved.     Call for Questions: Ahead of this event we’d be particularly interested to hear which topics and key questions should be explored. I'm seeing a trend in turbine management companies only looking for a certain amount of experience when hiring turbine technicians/troubleshoot technicians. This baffles me. 🤔 Across Europe, there's an abundance of eager service-level technicians undertaking courses and doing everything possible to get into the industry, often funding it all themselves. Unfortunately, they are being overlooked. This hiring strategy is short-lived. Hiring, training, and nurturing staff will create loyal employees who appreciate the work you, as a business, have put into ensuring their success within the industry. Of course, this comes with a price, but training your own junior staff and bringing them through the ranks will save you in the long term. With the current hiring trend, experienced technicians will (and rightly so) demand higher salaries and move jobs more frequently. Europe's wind ambitions are exciting, and the industry will flourish.
