  • Climate Change: Managing Risk and Uncertainty

    Institute and Faculty of Actuaries

    This paper outlines the actuarial approach to managing the risks and impacts of climate change. In particular we highlight the extreme impact low-likelihood scenarios in climate change and draw the analogy between the capital management of 1-in-200 year risks for insurance companies. As a part of the management of climate change we argue that a ruin scenario should be developed to help focus global governance.

    Institutional investment-only platform (also known as gateway) products have been with us now for many years and there is evidence that this market is beginning to concentrate as schemes gravitate to the stronger providers and players that have not achieved critical mass exit the market. In this article, we consider the factors that are driving this activity and the beneficial and negative impacts this change may have on the marketplace.

    In the opening sections of the review the themes of climate change and resource depletion are examined and the impacts of these issues for actuaries is considered. Subsequently 21 papers on a range of topics are reviewed and organised into six subject areas: Concepts; Current Status of Resources; Current Status of Climate Science; Economic Responses; Institutional Investment Issues; and Risk Management and Uncertainty. Each review provides a summary of the paper, a critique and then some…

    Our paper reviews the academic research linking sustainability issues with the banking and monetary system. We conclude that work is scarce in this area and is desperately needed. Further we identify three key themes for future actuarial research:

    1. Questioning the policy aim of pursuing infinite growth on a finite planet.
    2. The implications for actuarial work in a de-growth or steady-state economy
    3. The failure of GDP as a sustainable measure of welfare and its potential…

    Our paper reviews the academic research linking sustainability issues with the banking and monetary system. We conclude that work is scarce in this area and is desperately needed. Further we identify three key themes for future actuarial research:

    1. Questioning the policy aim of pursuing infinite growth on a finite planet.
    2. The implications for actuarial work in a de-growth or steady-state economy
    3. The failure of GDP as a sustainable measure of welfare and its potential replacements.
