In the latest Priorities and Operational Planning Guidance 2024/25, NHS England has included objectives for the digital maturity of all NHS systems to drive its three main goals: 🎯 Recovering core services and productivity 🎯 Making progress in delivering the key ambitions in the Long Term Plan 🎯 Continue to transform the NHS for the future Some of the main objectives for the digital maturity of all NHS systems are:  ✅ All NHS systems are to “continue to deliver the commitments set out in the strategic plans for the digitisation of services to support integration and service transformation: A plan for digital health and social care and Data Saves Lives.” ✅ All NHS systems are to “continue to support the levelling up of provider digital maturity across all sectors, with a focus on deploying and upgrading electronic patient record systems in line with the What Good Looks Like framework.” This is to “ensure plans are improving adherence to standards for well led digital leadership and will deliver smart foundation for basic digital infrastructure”. ✅ NHS systems are to “support and prioritise the implementation of the Federated Data Platform (FDP) to support elective recovery, care co-ordination (including optimising discharge), population health management and vaccination programmes.” Sophie Bullimore asked experts in digital healthcare, including Altera Digital Health UK to share their opinion on the Guidance and the objectives. Research by NHS Providers found that 73% of trust leaders surveyed said that funding and financial constraints are the biggest barrier to digital transformation. Saffron Cordery, deputy chief executive of NHS Providers, said that outdated technology often adds to clinicians’ workloads and hinders, rather than improves, efficiency and productivity. “Digital transformation has huge potential to give patients better access to their data, better access to care and to ensure that staff can get the reliable information they need to inform decision-making and improve quality of care. Mark Cubbon, group chief executive at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, explained to HTN their impressive work at integrating patient data for the benefit of patients and clinicians. It is music to our ears. It is often forgotten that data integration falls into two types. You can integrate data for an individual patient, and that is what HL7 and other messaging services are for. It’s a quick and secure way to ping other systems and find out what they hold about the patient you need to manage. The other type is sometimes more neglected. What if you don’t know which patient you should manage next? Now you have to find a needle in a very large haystack: for example, the patients who have waited longest, or have inconsistencies in their pathway data, or are not responding to communications. HL7 messaging isn’t going to help, because you can’t ping all the systems about all the patients, or your IT is going to keel over. What you need instead is a Unified Data Layer (UDL), where all the information you need is brought together in a completely consistent way. This is Insource Ltd’s speciality. Lord Darzi’s review highlights the crucial role of digital technology in improving health and care delivery and productivity, including utilising the potential of NHS App. This is why it’s important to focus on the future of digital health portals. 💡 While the use of digital health portals, including websites, apps and online consultations, has expanded, this has also led to inconsistency in definitions, language and terminologies used within them, and there is also a significant variation in their functionality. 🤝 Working alongside the Patient Information Forum, the PRSB consulted with patients, health and care professionals, commissioners and suppliers to explore potential opportunities and barriers to increasing engagement for people with long-term conditions to manage their own care better using such portals. We recently caught up with Jeremy (Jez) Gee at the Bradford & Craven Long Covid Service which supports patients from Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Bradford District Care NHS Foundation Trust to get his thoughts on our digital C19-YRS platform and the impact it has had on the local service. "On average the app takes admin 10 minutes or less to set a patient up to self complete assessment. Last week, AdviseInc embarked on an ambitious roadshow across NHS trusts in the South West of England, engaging a different Integrated Care System (ICS) each day of the week with our innovative spend analytics service (Platform Plus). Over one week, we delivered tailored sessions in each ICS, demonstrating the transformative potential of Platform Plus to our customers. The roadshow provided an excellent opportunity for procurement professionals to explore Platform Plus' extensive capabilities and how it can address their challenges. *** Key Highlights of the Roadshow *** 1. Unveiling the Benefits of Platform Plus: Teams gained a comprehensive understanding of Platform Plus, our advanced spend analytics service. Through interactive demonstrations and real-NHS case studies, customers saw firsthand how our services identify opportunities to reduce unwarranted clinical variation, test managed services for value and validate benchmarking opportunities to drive cost efficiencies and enhance overall operational performance. 2. Tackling Unwarranted Clinical Variation: One of the standout features presented was our new analysis focusing on unwarranted clinical variation. By identifying and addressing these variations, we work with clinicians, general managers, finance and procurement to understand why and reduce the variation. Ensuring consistent, high-quality patient care while delivering better value. This insight was particularly well-received, with many attendees eager to explore further within their trusts. 3. Support for FOI Requests: The ability of Platform Plus to support teams in responding to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests was another highlight. Our solution simplifies and expedites the FOI response process, ensuring compliance and transparency. This feature resonated strongly with attendees, who recognised the non-value add this causes them and could potentially free them up in the future by our team taking it on. 4. Positive Feedback and Future Collaborations The positive feedback we received throughout the roadshow was incredibly encouraging. Healthcare professionals appreciated the depth of insights provided and the practical applications of Platform Plus in their day-to-day operations. 5.
