  • The botanical biofiltration of VOCs with active airflow: is removal efficiency related to chemical properties?

In 2019 I initiated an internship with UTS in the field of atmospheric environment and urban greening. Over a period of six months, I co-managed a project investigating the public health benefits of urban greening and ‘green wall’ devices on indoor health. While I was only an undergraduate at the time, I worked well above expectations to initiate and build a relationship with my project supervisor (Thomas Pettit, PhD) and manage the operation of laboratory processes, primary data collection and reporting to academic supervisors. Under the strict budget and time limitations of the ‘research world’, I was able to employ my academic writing and communication skills to efficiently deliver a report to supervisors. As a direct result of my professional work and scientific reporting, this work was published in the Journal of Atmospheric Environment in 2019.the variability in SPREs amongst VOCs. The octanol water partition coefficient, proton affinity, Henry's law constant and vapour pressure were not significant predictors of SPRE. The most influential predictor variable was the dipole moment, alone accounting for 49.8% of the SPRE variability. The model thus allows for an estimation of VOC removal efficiency based on a VOC's chemical properties, and supports the idea that system optimisation could be achieved through methods that promote both VOC partitioning into the biofilter's aqueous phase, and substrate development to enhance adsorption.

    Research Intern / Volunteer

    -

Research intern for 4 months within the UTS science faculty. I investigated the air-filtering potential of active green wall (vertical garden-like) structures and determined their efficacy in removing common urban air pollutants from the indoor environment. My role culminated in co-authorship on a paper in the Journal of Atmospheric Environment by Thomas Pettit (HDR), supervised by Dr. Fraser Torpy.
