Partner's News The Energy Hubs – Fill the Backbone report by Hydrogen Scotland member Net Zero Technology Centre highlights the emerging opportunity to export green hydrogen from Scotland into the expanding hydrogen market in Europe. Economic modelling indicates that a 10 GW scale Energy Hub in Scotland producing green hydrogen from floating offshore wind could produce hydrogen for £3.90/kg. Many of the pieces of the puzzle needed to deliver enduring #decarbonisation pathways are in place. With the right frameworks and incentives, the industry has the necessary ambition, and there is plenty of capital ready to be deployed. The UK benefits from a highly competitive energy market, with many diversified and sophisticated developers seeking to build projects across a broad range of technologies. We have identified three overarching problems that must be tackled.

What a watershed moment! When I joined the energy sector as a trader back in 2006, coal was fundamental to balancing the system and keeping the lights on. The possibility of a system without any coal generation was almost unimaginable. It's easy to focus on what still needs to happen but worth pausing to reflect on just how far we've come. Yesterday’s Autumn budget saw key changes across the fiscal landscape, with strong rhetoric around strengthening the UK’s commitment to net zero. While technologies, such as CCUS and hydrogen saw an increase in funding, the North Sea story presents a more nuanced question for the UK energy market.   Although the government has previously balanced tax and investment incentives in the North Sea, this recent budget has presented a shift from the status quo. As EPL and headline rates rise, the economic viability of both new and existing North Sea projects are challenged. This will likely result a drop in investment into North Sea oil and gas, hence driving down production volumes.
