Has your Google Analytics (GA4) been set up correctly? Here is a step-by-step guide created by Team MPG’s GA4 experts on where to start and how to achieve a good end result. Where did all of the GA4 data go? This is a question marketers around the world have been asking since Google pushed through changes to Consent Mode in GA4. Horror stories abound of accounts that have seen their traffic drop 90% or more. Whether this is you, or if you have 'only' seen a minor 60% decrease, you are going to want to recover as much of that data as possible. Read on to find out how you can maximise your GA4 data recovery. Firstly, we need to imagine three different groups of users:  1) The in a hurry users 2) All popups are bad users 3) The cookie refusers Use the diagram to help better visualise the steps below. The In A Hurry User These users might not know what cookies are or aren't too fussed about sharing data. They tend to click the first button they see as quickly as possible.  Solution: Have the “Accept” button as a different colour and try to make it stand out more compared to the “No thank you” button. Doing this will help you recover around 10 - 30% of your GA4 data. All Popups Are Bad These users either don't like sharing data or just dislike popups. They will assume the banner is negative and will click the opt-out button if it's easy and presented to them.  Solution: Utilising a “Manage Preferences” button is perfect for this user since its confusing interface will result in most users clicking “Accept”. Doing this will help recover around 30 - 60% of your GA4 data. Extra Step: However, an extra step you can implement to help maximise the number of users who opt-in is to ensure that all of the cookie consent features within “Manage Preferences” have been set to enabled by default. Implementing this strategy will help recover around 60 - 80% of your GA4 data whilst still giving users who wish to opt out the choice to do so. The Cookie Refuser These users understand what cookies are and are familiar with cookie banners.  Regardless of the number of extra steps you add these users will opt out if they want to.  However, these users will only make up around 10 - 20% of the users that come to your website. Solution: Focus on the other 80 - 90% of users and make it easier for them to opt in whilst still giving users the option to opt-out. Has Your Direct Traffic Increased Since Consent Mode? The spike in direct traffic you see in GA4 is due to users navigating around your website before they click “Accept” on the cookie banner.   When a user leaves the original landing page they arrived on and goes to a second landing page before interacting with the cookie banner their original attribution is sometimes lost and Google will assign them as “Direct” when they click “Accept”.  Solution: The banner needs to be unavoidable, make it big, put it in the centre of the screen, and make it so a user can’t interact with the website until they have engaged with the cookie banner. Implementing this will help stop users from being falsely assigned as “Direct” and will increase the number of users who opt-in.
