SoftBank Group Corp. has announced its acquisition of Graphcore, a leading British AI chipmaker. Graphcore’s key offering is a range of “Intelligence Processing Units” – accelerators designed specifically for AI workloads – along with a software stack that allows developers to utilise its hardware effectively. The acquisition of Graphcore by SoftBank is likely to provide the AI chipmaker with significant resources and opportunities for expansion. NEWS! - The Consultancy Group (London) Today I heard on the radio about the global issue with Crowdstrike that has impacted a host of services integrated with Microsoft. This problem affects companies worldwide, including in the UK, Australia, America, and beyond. Technically, the issue isn't complex; it involves deleting a specific file on a computer. However, the challenge for companies is that this cannot be done remotely. They must physically travel to their data centres or cloud-hosting locations to address the problem. This requires deploying someone to run a program that will delete the file across thousands of global companies—a simple yet daunting task. I wouldn't want that responsibility. In my work with CDOs, heads of data, data engineers, and analysts, I see the risks they manage. A single change could potentially disrupt their entire commercial operations. Navigating these challenges requires not only technical skill but also careful coordination and a strong understanding of the broader impact of such actions. It’s a high-stakes environment where precision and attention to detail are paramount. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced an £8bn investment to construct the next-generation hyperscale datacentres in the UK. This five-year plan is set to create approximately 14,000 jobs annually, spanning various sectors such as #construction, #facilitymaintenance, #engineering, and #telecommunications, thus boosting the local economy. The exact locations of these datacentres have not been disclosed yet but will enhance the existing capacity in London. Moreover, this initiative by AWS follows the trend of major tech companies like #Google and #Microsoft expanding their cloud infrastructure in the UK. Google, for instance, is investing £790m in a new datacentre campus in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, with contractors TSL, J & D Pierce (Contracts) Ltd, and Dornan involved in the project. Microsoft has also acquired a 48-acre site near Leeds to build a hyperscale datacentre, aligning with its increased focus on UK investments. The surge in datacentre investments by key industry players signifies the growing importance of cloud services and data management infrastructure in the UK market.
