I’m looking to connect with a few specific people who are involved in recruiting for Actuarial Graduate roles and also potentially Actuarial Internships/Industrial Placements in the UK. If you fall into one of the following categories, or know someone who does, I’d love to have a chat about something I am working on to support some of the actuarial society members at leading university in London. ▪ An internal recruiter, who has good knowledge of exactly what happens once someone applies online to a graduate/undergraduate actuarial opportunity. So an understanding of where that application goes, how it is processed, the various online stages, what does/doesn’t get through to the ‘in-person’ stages, how much is automated, some stats/figures on success rates, and what it takes for that application to lead to an interview/assessment centre with an actuary. ▪ An Actuary or Actuarial Analyst who is directly involved in interviewing/assessing applicants for graduate roles/internships/placement years. You might be involved in running assessment days, holding interviews or helping directly with the process of selecting which individuals are invited to these stages. Any knowledge of how people are selected to be able to meet you would be a bonus, but more what are you looking for from that point on – whether that’s on CVs or how they perform in person. ▪ An Actuarial Analyst who has relatively recently been through the process of going from studying at university to securing an actuarial role. Someone who is happy to share their experience of how they felt, what they did, the application process, dealing with rejections, what it took to get there etc. For the avoidance of doubt, I don’t personally recruit at this level – this will not be a recruitment/business development type conversation - it’s more an opportunity to help with a challenge young people are facing who aspire to become an actuary in the future. Part-Qualified Pensions Actuaries – there is still time to secure a new role before the end of the year.   We have just over 5 weeks remaining, but that's plenty of time. How will it work in reality? ▪ Day 1 – Get in touch with me for an exploratory conversation. Learn about the opportunities available at your level, and agree on a plan of action. ▪ Day 2 - If using a CV, perhaps 24 hours for you to polish it up and send it over. But if you have 3+ years' experience at a good consultancy, a CV may not be needed. I would then speak with the relevant companies on your behalf. ▪ Day 3-5 - allow 1-3 days for interviews to be requested, and a little time to book in your meetings. ▪ Week 2 - First stage interviews with a choice of online or in-person. ▪ Week 3 - Complete any 2nd stage interviews and receive offers.    Some of the above can happen more quickly (a second stage isn’t always required for example) or more slowly depending on diaries. But you can certainly receive offers within 3 weeks and be in a position to accept and resign on a similar timescale.   So don’t put things off until the New Year – you know how busy you’re going to be in Jan! I usually avoid posting about jobs, but… I’m currently recruiting for number of part-qualified and recently qualified actuaries to form a brand-new team being set up in central London. The roles will suit part qualified actuaries with a couple of years’ experience, through to people who have fully qualified in the last few years. (I use those levels as a guide – exams are not essential!) I’d say the roles might particularly appeal to people who enjoy getting stuck into the numbers and understanding schemes in detail – they do all of their actuarial work in-house, as opposed to outsourcing it to other teams/countries, so lots of opportunity to be very ‘hands on’. There will of course be plenty of opportunity for client contact, and across the team there could be some people who prefer client consulting, and others who perhaps prefer a mainly technical role. Fingers crossed you all get the results you are after, especially those who hopefully will now be exam-qualified. I'm always amazed at how the actuarial student population can manage their studies, take the exams AND work a full time job in actuarial. Q4 (from my view) always seems like a good time to see what is available in the general insurance actuarial market. Processes tend to move quickly, especially compared to Q3 with summer & school holidays. If you are on a 1 month or 3 month notice you'll be able to get a start date confirmed for early 2025. From a financial standpoint it will help maximise your 2025 bonus paid in 2026 due to the calendar year running from January-December. There is also always plenty of opportunity in the market, with companies looking to get the headcount confirmed and hiring completed before the end of the year. Happy to have a chat. My salary survey results showed that part-qualified pensions actuaries work on average 7.8% overtime. Contracted hours are typically between 35 and 37 hours per week, and actual hours worked are typically between 36-40 hours. I highlight this here as fairly often I’ll speak with people at this level who feel they are working more hours than others. The results of the Social Housing Pension Scheme 30 September 2023 actuarial valuation are out - and the total cost of the 1/60th Final Salary section has reduced by over 60% to 16%! This is quite staggering - are we in a new era of affordable defined benefits?
