At MSIVOD, we're avoiding the AVOD (Advertisement Video on Demand) model, which appears to be dominating the industry at the moment, where customers watch films for free with ads. We feel it's disrupting the marketspace because film-makers who work hard creating content, barely get paid for their work as a result of this model. In the past, when producers had a million views, they'd be making millions on purchases, but now, AVOD rates payout very little when there are millions of minutes being streamed from a film. How could this possibly be fair? If you are a film-maker, you will understand more because it impacts you the most. If you are a viewer, then we need to look after our film-makers because they are essentially creating the content to entertain us, and we don't want them to give up if they do not earn their well deserved royalties. Who's with me on this? I can't imagine I am the only one feeling this. Is success in podcasting only about making money? This morning, we discussed the state of the podcasting industry and how many podcasters often misunderstand success or have unrealistic expectations. The PodMatch June 2024 report shared some eye-opening stats. For example, the report reveals that podcasts with over 100 episodes have a 93% chance of failure! They went on to say, 'you're four times more likely to succeed with a business than a podcast'. Will the next government bring increased regulation for the UK advertising industry? The UK general election falls on the last day of MAD//FEST LONDON, so by the time Grace Carter gets on stage to start the party in E1, many of the votes for the political parties will have already been cast. One change that the new government could oversee is increased external regulation and governance of the advertising industry - would that be a good thing or a bad thing for you? Let's take AI for example. Katherine Viner, editor of the Guardian, recently called for AI regulation. She said, "Without quality journalism to train and ground large language models, these technologies would struggle to make sense of the world around them." Without quality, trusted data to train the AI models on, it is easy to see how we could get into a vicious circle of AI choking on its own exhaust fumes: 1 - Incorrect content published 2 - AI reads that incorrect content 3 - AI therefore writes incorrect content Crap in, crap out, as they say in the trade! ;-) I would also add that digital advertising relies on quality content that consumers spend time with, so that the advertising has a chance of having an impact. For example: The difference in dwell time on an MFA site, which uses GenAI to create the content and click-bait to get somebody there, to a page with 10 ads, is a world away from the experience of a subscriber to a premium publisher site, who logs on to consume the content they pay for and only sees a single ad next to that valued content. 💬 - What do you think - more government regulation or not? #ai #regulation #advertising

#ITVX record month - the value of localisation "ITV’s Euro 2024 coverage, along with a new season of Love Island and a selection of new dramas drove record streaming numbers in June for ITVX, with 375.8 million streams across the month, making it ITVX’s best ever month in streaming, up 54 per cent year on year." It's hard to remember almost 2 years when ITVX was about to launch, there were big questions about its viability in an increasing competitive space, dominated by #global #svods #avods However, ITV has taken the #streaming world in the #UK by storm, and keeps going from strength to strength. It had huge success with the Post Office drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office. Now, with the #euro2024 tournament, viewing was always likely to go up, but it's hardly an anomaly, its on the back of consistent strong performance for ITV. "The 19 Euro 2024 matches on ITV in June were streamed just under 84 million times, with the current season of Love Island up to 76 million streams after 28 episodes, which is up 10 million on the comparable point in the season last year. Including streams to previous seasons which are also available on ITVX, Love Island has delivered over 80 million streams across June. New dramas pulled strong audiences in June including The Flash, the DC superhero series and Arrow spinoff, darkly comedic crime thriller Bay of Fires, and the UK premiere of Orphan Black: Echoes starring Krysten Ritter and Keeley Hawes. Commissioned dramas including Red Eye and Douglas Is Cancelled continue to grow and were also top performers in the period." Yesterday, I posted about Tubi's entrance into the UK, and the huge name they bring. However, ITV has a real mix for UK audiences. They have the big films from Hollywood that will always have an audience. They also have UK commissioned series, reality TV, as well as benefitting from years of presence in the market, with its series and shows having ingrained following in the UK, as any local service would. While the #streamingmedia space seems to get crowded, and competition is intense, its easy to think those with the deepest pockets will eventually triumph. That's not the case. Apple TV is maybe the best example, with cash to burn, but has not threatened #Netflix's domination of the SVOD market. Just because big US global streamers set their eyes on the UK, it doesn't mean that they will be successful. #Localisation is the key driver of growth and success across the world, Netflix has invested heavily in local production, and this has helped them maintain their top spot around the world. 🚨Pitch Positive Pledge only works when its two way…how can we expect clients to learn better behaviours if we don’t teach them. Behaviour change takes years of undoing and nudging towards the end goal. 💡It’s important and OK to say no if those behaviours aren’t observed. More importantly let the client or intermediary know why you have declined and what they could do better next time. It’s not a game of stick or twist…positively we are trying to do this every day Publicis Media Starcom but it’s a collective and considered decision. Our people 🙌 need to come first and that’s where it starts. Second, third and fourth is every other factor.

The results of a consumer survey undertaken by the Night Time Industries Association smashes the current narrative being pushed in some areas of media and politics that the UK public (of all ages) has changed the way they engage with the NTE. Data from over 2300 respondents shows: *52% are not able to afford to go out   *44% say Labour stands out as the political party most supportive of nightlife and culture   *68% of 18-24 year-old respondents participate in social activities several times a week or more *43% attended cultural events at least once a month over the past six months.   *76% felt impacted by the inability to go out during the COVID-19 pandemic   *37% indicated that lower drink prices would encourage them to go out more frequently, with better late-night transport cited by 23%. *Dining out is the most popular activity (55%) with younger respondents favour going to the cinema, playing sports, and attending nightclubs. "Talent is expanding, with nearly 100 female comedian headliners having taken to the stage this year" "Comedy venues are becoming a place for socialising and bonding through the natural high of laughter" Preaching to the choir here at Big Difference Company with this one! We are all about supporting new, emerging and underrepresented talent through our Circuit Breakers, Leicester Comedian of the Year Competition, Bridging the Gap and The UK Kids' Comedy Festival programmes. We create a festival community annually in February here in Leicestershire with over 70 venues for 2025, all harnessing the power of comedy, socialising and laughter. Quick take on the budget - further thoughts to follow. For film and TV there seemed to be two tax incentive policies that I could spot. These were ones already announced by the Tory government. The indie sector needs, and deserves more from this government. Department for Culture, Media and Sport - there needs to be more coming. Pact and Creative UK I know you are lobbying to drive change, as are Bectu and the excellent Philippa Childs For ref the two were: 5.108 Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit: Additional tax relief for visual effects – From 1 April 2025, film and high-end TV productions will be able to claim an enhanced 39% rate of Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit on their UK visual effects costs. UK visual effects costs will be exempt from the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit’s 80% cap on qualifying expenditure. Costs incurred from 1 January 2025 will be eligible. This measure was announced at Spring Budget 2024 and it will be legislated in Finance Bill 2024-25.     5.109 Independent Film Tax Credit – From 1 April 2025, UK films with budgets under £15 million and a UK lead writer or director will be able to claim an enhanced 53% rate of Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit, known as the Independent Film Tax Credit. Expenditure incurred from after 1 April 2024 on films that began principal photography on or after 1 April 2024 is eligible. This measure was announced at Spring Budget 2024 and has been legislated. For the next version, how about a QR code enabling the user to literally "share the wonder" through a channel-exclusive ticket offer for them and a friend? This simple change, supported by some box office work, would develop a static advert into an audience engagement and growth tool, and offer some v handy data off the back end. #artsmarketing
