I’m at the #TechUK Tech and NetZero Conference today. Some great panel discussions on the challenges and strategies of reducing our impact on the planet. One of the conclusions was that increased regulation will have to be part of the solution to hit climate targets. No one likes red tape, but until the industry can articulate the business value of sustainability better, a stick is more effective than a carrot.

The Government have published a Green Paper setting out their vision for a modern Industrial Strategy - a "credible, 10-year plan to deliver the certainty and stability businesses need to invest in the high growth sectors that will drive our growth mission". This is a public consultation that will inform the development of the new Industrial Strategy, the Government's proposed plan to ease the investor journey and create long term, inclusive, secure and sustainable growth. Today, I got an opportunity to attend a keynote by Dr James Richardson https://lnkd.in/eTjJwjXy during EMEX London event. Well I would definitely say, quite an impressive keynote and views. I hope you all agree with his views and proposed ten recommendations to the Govt as follows: Make electricity cheaper, Reverse recent policy rollbacks, Remove policy barriers for heat pumps and EV, Comprehensive programme for decarbonizing public buildings, Implement CID auctions, Accelerate electrification of Industrial heat, Ramp-up tree plantation, Better business models for engineered removals, Skills enhancement and upgradation, and finally Strengthen national adaptation plans Well, I personally believe we need to have better and practical ESG monitoring strategy, this should not be just a formality like most of the ISO audits. We need to adopt technology here, there are some comprehensive solutions available like GovEVA, my friend Narayan Rao drives it and I have seen quite a good adoption of it and corporate are really using it to the fullest. #goveva #energy #productivagroup #edxtech

The total cost of Birmingham City Council's Oracle implementation disaster is set to reach £216.5 million ($280.4 million) by April 2026, according to a new audit report. Europe's largest local authority went live with the Oracle Fusion single platform for finance, payroll, HR, procurement, supply chain management, and customer relationship management – replacing an SAP system first introduced in 1997 – in April 2022. Since its introduction, the council has been unable to file auditable accounts. It is set to re-implement an "out of the box" version of the solution after customizations in the first effort disrupted its bank reconciliation system. The system also left the council unable to provide an audit trail or detect fraud for 18 months. The cost of the Oracle project increased from an initial estimate of £19 million to a projected cost of £131 million, including the re-implementation. However, a fresh report from the Audit Reform Lab, a collective of academics, consultants, and activists based at The University of Sheffield , estimate the true cost of the Oracle implementation disaster is set to be £216.5 million until April 2026 as the council's spending plans had relied on expected costs savings from the ERP system, which it had later canceled. But they needed to improve the accessibility and usability of the vast amount of data in its possession... This data is key to more effective pricing and ensuring electricity isn't wasted. Yesterday the UK Government set out it's 10-year Industrial Strategy which is key to delivering the certainty and stability businesses need to invest in high growth sectors that will drive the UK's growth mission. Identified as a priority sector, the UK defence sector is foundational for economic growth across the UK, supporting jobs as well as driving innovation through investment in research and development. Addressing any issues that inhibit or prevent growth in defence will be key to ensuring national security and prosperity in the UK. We welcome The Defence Industrial Strategy which will be commissioned by the Secretary of State for Defence and will also be complementary to the upcoming Strategic Defence Review. The industrial strategy will ensure that the Government can improve the UK's performance on defence exports and get more defence output for every pound spent. It's been a really interesting process trying to distill down the processes by which we can try and get to useful metrics - about carbon and more - considering the barriers put in our way. I'm hugely grateful to the work that's been done in this field to try and standardise approaches - particularly the Cloud Carbon Footprint tool and the SCI/Impact Framework from the Green Software Foundation. I still think this is the hardest problem in the field - we have many approaches that we believe will work to making our software more sustainable but how do we prove they work? It's still a really involved process that requires a lot of thought and care. Maybe we'll look back in ten years, when we have realtime carbon metrics for every part of our system at our fingertips, and wonder how anyone managed?
