Allow me to re-introduce myself ! I’m Lorraine, an MCIPD qualified HR professional with 26 (eek!) years of experience in the HR field. For most of my career, I worked in HR in the third sector so I'm used to finding solutions and making changes with not much of a budget being available to make them happen. I’ve been working remotely as an HR consultant for 4 years, working on a flexible basis with a range of mainly small business clients. The common denominator is that small business budgets are often also restricted, so I'm geared towards providing HR services that offer value for money. Because of the depth and range of my experience, I have expertise in most things HR-related. You name it, I've probably done it! What I've realised is that small business is where all the real action is. My clients are smart, ambitious, value led and determined to grow their businesses to even greater success. They're either looking to get their HR fundamentals right or they want to refine things so that their staff feel proud to work with them to achieve business objectives. I became an HR consultant because I developed a long-term health condition. What initially was a negative quickly became a positive, when I started to work with some fantastic individuals and businesses, helping them with policies, recruitment, performance management and much more. Some have been as far afield as Malaysia and Australia! In essence, I help to take away the stress that can occur when small businesses are hiring for the first time or when they're worried that their contracts or policies aren't right for them or their team. I now have a list of regular clients, to whom I'm really loyal, and I also work on one-off pieces of work with others. I like to think of myself as level headed, calm, pragmatic and resourceful, and I hope that this comes through in how I support my clients. There's nothing better than receiving heartfelt thanks from a client (and their employees) for helping them through a difficult situation or setting up great frameworks that will encourage everyone to feel motivated and valued. I live in Central Scotland with my husband of many, many years(!) and 2 chinchillas. I'm easily bribed with chocolate, pizza or cake, and walking is one of my favourite activities. Changes on the horizon for Employers in Hospitality and Events: New elected Labour propose to ban exploitative zero hours contracts. Contracts will need to reflect hours regularly worked. The emphasis here is on the word exploitative. It’s not saying all ‘work’ contracts will be banned. But it’s announcing an end to ‘one sided flexibility’. We are supporting Centre 33 this year with a couple of events and wondered if our LinkedIn colleagues would you like to also get involved whether that’s donating a prize for one of their events or attending their black tie event or donating an amount to help them in keep offering the services whatever way you can possibly help would be greatly appreciated by them and also us.   Who are Centre 33? They are a charity supporting local young people. Many people we see tell us that they have no-one to turn to when they are worried, scared or have a problem they can’t solve. And many children are caring for someone at home and struggling to cope. Centre 33 provides free and confidential support for anyone aged up to 25 across Cambridgeshire, helping with their mental health, caring responsibilities and other practical issues. Here’s a few examples of how donations you can help:   £14 can cover the costs of our support and information line for an hour, meaning Centre 33 can be there when a child or young person needs to call £165 could help a young person struggling and with no one else to talk to, enabling them to access 1:1 support and the practical help right for them £2,000 could help 35 young carers to take a break from their significant responsibilities, enjoy a fun day out and meet others in a similar situation I do know they do need auction and raffle prizes for events raising funds for Centre 33. A luxury item, case of wine, event tickets, or maybe a unique money-can’t buy experience would be amazing. We’re specifically looking for prizes for a golf fundraising day on 25th October or an exclusive black-tie casino/dinner/dancing event on 1st November but could also make good use of any donations that arrive later. HR top tip 💡 Review your Employee Files! When was the last time you did this? If it’s been a while, here are some basics to consider; 🟡 Right to work - the potential penalty for employing an illegal worker is up to £45,000 for the first offence and up to £60,000 for repeated offences. The best way to ensure you never face this is to check right to work documents and keep copies on file ✅ 🟡 Next of Kin details - in an emergency, who do you need to contact? You might already have these on file, but it's also worth checking periodically if any contact details have changed ✅ 🟡 Employee contact details - if your employee didn't turn up to work, then how would you contact them? Make sure you have up to date contact details on file and again regularly check these are up to date ✅ 🟡 Contract of employment or statement of terms - make sure you keep a copy on file! So often I find this vital document missing, either because contracts were never issued, or the employer forgot to keep a copy on file ✅ 🟡 Records of any letters, notes or any other relevant documents - the best thing you can do with these is attach them to the employee file so that you don't lose track of any important information ✅ 🟡 Copies of any statutory requirements or qualifications required for the role - driving licenses, SIA licenses etc. If the role requires these, then make sure you have copies on file ✅ This list is not exhaustive, but covers the basics and bare minimum...... have you spotted any gaps in your files? 🤔 Need some help or have any documents missing❓ just let me know and I’ll get you sorted 🌟

😎How’s your Monday going? Got some interesting comments on my ‘Old HR get in the bin’ post…. First up, I am not slagging off my fellow professionals. But I am slagging off old style HR. Things like: 👎Blanket mandates 👎Controlling objective setting 👎Policing of objective attainment 👎Removing the ability of managers to manage 👎Pursuing IIP as a ✅ box exercise when your culture is rotten as your people are exhausted and under resourced 🤷‍♀️If the stats are showing an uptick in employee turnover, burnout and reduced engagement then it’s clear all the above isn’t working. Yes, it might be the mandate of Senior Management handed to HR (like a poison chalice) but if you ignore what’s happening in front of your very eyes then things will never change.. Instead: ✅Talk to your employees - find out what they need. Agree what you can deliver, how and when - get them involved… ✅Empower managers to have proper and constructive dialogue with their team ✅Trust managers to manage ✅Have a framework, but make sure that within the framework there is scope to be able to respond to varying needs. Nuanced as opposed to one sized ✅Consider who is most important to the business: Shareholders, Clients or Employees (clue all 3 are but usually there is a focus only on one or two) 😎Anyway, as you were. Today is my first diarised development day. A scheduled date in the diary to take some time out and focus on my personal development whatever that may look like which is a concept that feeds straight into my constant love of learning. The UK Government is looking at bringing in a Day 1 right to claim unfair dismissal. This means that employers will no longer be able to dismiss someone in their first few days or weeks without giving a good reason and having been through some kind of performance or disciplinary process. The probationary period is a time for both you and your employee to assess whether the role is a good fit. This period is essential for evaluating the new employee’s performance and determining whether they meet your required standards. Regular feedback during this period is crucial. Managers should arrange regular check-ins to set objectives, discuss progress, provide and receive feedback, and offer support where necessary. If the employee is not meeting expectations, this period allows you to address issues early on, offering guidance and setting clear improvement targets. During this time, employees are generally on shorter notice periods, making it easier for either party to terminate the contract if necessary. Of course, you want to avoid this wherever possible, but it does give you both a let-out if the employment is just not working. If you keep records of 121s during the probationary period , they will become key evidence in any performance or disciplinary process yo u may need to follow and will show you have followed a fair process. When is it not a busy time for #HR? We exist to be busy! 🐝 Busy implementing & improving opportunities wherever we can & should - not just to be ‘compliant’ & cover the basics… Not just to ensure fairness, equity & inclusion… But to create companies with happy, healthy, engaged teams who deserve to expect (much) MORE than the bare minimum from their employer. 1️⃣ Day one employment rights? Bring it on! We should be treating people well already without fear they’ll take us to ET ❎ No zero hours? No brainer. 📊 Mandatory pay gap reporting? Love to see it (just please heeellllpp us with the systems & data to make it easier!!) 👶🏻 Enhanced parental leave policies? Absolutely. 🤒 Better access to sick pay? How about we just pay people in full 🤷🏼‍♀️ 💰 Living Wage raises? Not extra work for HR if you already pay your people beyond the #NLW wherever they are! I’m not worried about a new government creating extra work… 🙏 I’m #grateful to be part of a business that already does beyond so many of the ‘right’ things - and that has a culture where we can work together on anything we’re missing out on.
