It's a pleasure to learn insights on the transformative role of media in narrating the rich tapestry of African stories as I listen to insightful deliberations at #Africa Media Convention 2024. Esports media, in particular, holds a unique position in this narrative landscape. Beyond covering tournaments, it has the potential to initiate profound dialogues about our African heritage, challenging misconceptions and reshaping narratives. Esports media stands out due to its integration with the vibrant gaming culture. When this is thoughtfully combined with aspects of lifestyle, culture, and local nuances, it creates a multifaceted platform for entertainment and education that celebrates the diversity of people and places. Moreover, the empowerment of African youth is a cornerstone of this movement. By providing reliable information rooted in local realities, we can inspire and inform the next generation. The esports community is predominantly youthful, digitally savvy, and increasingly influential in addressing continental challenges through digital media. There are burgeoning opportunities to leverage this influence for greater causes. I remain hopeful and confident that we can evolve esports media to serve not only as a hub for gaming enthusiasts but also as a force for advocacy in critical areas such as climate change, diversity, and inclusion. By sharing the resilient stories of gamers and their daily triumphs, we can foster a narrative of hope and progress. Headline of the Morning - this is NOT a Black Woman or political issue. This is a journalism issue. The radio station owners did the right thing, but does appear they may have thrown her under the bus. The article says she did it without permission. If they broadcast it, that is permission. Meaning they knew. When the public watches an interview they expect the journalist is learning answers to the questions the same time they do. What makes the journalist asking the questions a journalist not just a member of the public , is training and experience. Getting the interview in the first place means the reporter specializes in the topic, has done some research and knows information the average person on the street might not know but would be interested to. Biden was in a tough spot. He was being criticized by opponents and folks in his party. His campaign was in crisis. When people in power fear threat of loss, they behave badly. The government left unchecked will always behave badly. It is the job of a journalist to keep the government and people in it in check. Allowing the subject of an interview, or a target of an investigation, to control the interview is not journalism. It is trying out to be a government public information officer. Or PIO. The reporter was fired for being unethical which stands to lose public trust. It is more than likely that everyone at the station knew she was given the questions and she only got fired when the info leaked out. Biden, like any other person with power , and his team , could always ask to pre draft the questions as a term for granting the interview and the station would have run it because they are benefiting from the advertising the election brings and don’t care either way who wins or loses the election. But that reporter didn’t have to accept and do the interview with pre drafted questions - but she did. Several judges and cops have expressed frustration off record and on about journalists not being licensed. This is why we aren’t. Journalists hold public trust as a condition of employment. If a journalist should break that trust , they never get it back. If they are given a second chance , they never hold public trust as completely as they did before they broke it by mistake or greed. The firing says - we will let the public decide if she agreed to do the interview our of greed or in the public interest.

First was an MSME Stakeholders Engagement Series for Women-Led Enterprises organised by Jennifer Adighije, SSA to the President on Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Digital Economy. It was a platform where esteemed female entrepreneurs like funke bucknor-obruthe, Banke Meshida-Lawal and Bukky George-Taylor among others to share their experiences and strategies for success. And there was my interview with Damian Eke, an assistant professor, School of Computer science at the University of Nottingham. We spoke about the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Africa. Last week, I was on the panel at the launch of the 2024 Brand Africa 100 Report - Kenya edition. Brand Africa 100 transverse Africa to collect Africans' opinions on their most admired brands overall and by specific categories, culminating in the largest and most cited such report in Africa. As explained to Thebe Ikalafeng and the audience between Kantar's Daniel Oseman and myself, in this year's survey, GeoPoll collected 300,000 data points from 31 countries from an 11-question open-ended questionnaire, data that was later analyzed by Kantar. The full report (see comments) was then released on #AfricaDay and this occasion was the Kenya leg of a continent-wide round of launches. Highlights: • Safaricom PLC/Mpesa is the #1 most admired brand in Kenya. • Equity Bank Limited is the most admired financial services brand in Kenya. • Citizen TV Kenya is the #1 most admired media brand. • Safaricom/Mpesa (Kenyan brand), The Coca-Cola Company (non-Kenyan brand) and UNICEF (Non-Profit brand) are the most admired brands for doing good for society, environment, and people. • Abbas Gullet (Boma PanAfrican), Abdi Mohamed (ABSA), Gina Din Kariuki (GDG), ABSA and National Basketball Association (NBA) Africa were recognized for Brand Excellence. My personal best finding: Kenyans rank Kenya as the #1 country contributing to a better Africa. We are proud of Kenya! My most upsetting finding: While 56% of Kenyans believe in Africa, but only 26% are loyal to African brands. This is crazy - what must we do to grow African brands in the minds of Africans? Other speakers at the event were Gina Din, Kiprono Kittony, EBS (Chairman Nairobi Securities Exchange PLC), H.E. Peter Maddens (Ambassador of Belgium to Kenya), and Mebs Tejpar of Capital Club East Africa.

At the time when I started building my business, it is fair to say I was a lone ranger. The industry I serve is extremely cut throat and highly competitive. So depending on whom I was speaking with, I was fed the very Swedish myth that partnership and collaboration did not mix with competition. I knew it wasn’t true. I just needed to come across the right minds who shared my ambition, work ethic, drive and in some cases, past experiences. Last week in Kigali, I heard so many people talk about collaboration’s key role in driving Africa's socio-economic success! Music to my ears!! Increasingly, people reach out to me to collaborate. In order to ensure it’s the right fit, I openly discuss the work load, using that to gauge how far their willing to go to achieve a healthy balance with me. A few times the harsh realization hits me and the partnership fails, mainly bevause one person was willing to carry the heavy load. Now that I know what I know, I’ve created a crucial metric that allows me to find the right collaborators : 1. Being honest with myself about my strengths and weaknesses. 2. Exploring possible sources of support 3. Being transparent, open and honest in conversations with my potential partners. (This is the most important thing for me) 4. Being willing to have tough conversations when something may be out of line 5. Setting the kind of boundaries that can be mutually beneficial!

Embracing Unity: A Journey of Connection at the African Heritage Celebration 🌍 Tonight at Gracie Mansion in New York City, I had the profound privilege of reconnecting with old friends and welcoming new ones during the vibrant African Heritage Celebration. This gathering was not just an event; it was a testament to the power of love and peace that binds us across cultures and continents. Reflecting on my journey, there were times when attending such an event seemed daunting. As a white woman from Poland, raised in a largely homogenous society, I initially felt out of place stepping into diverse cultural gatherings. My early experiences were clouded by a simple fear of the unknown—without personal connections to the African community, I was unsure of what to expect. However, each interaction, each shared story, and each laugh has been a step closer to understanding and appreciation. Now, surrounded by friends from various African countries, I am constantly amazed by our similarities. Our dreams, challenges, and hopes are not bound by the color of our skin or the lands of our birth. These connections have taught me a powerful lesson about the essence of humanity: we are all woven from the same fabric. Events like the African Heritage Celebration are crucial not only in celebrating culture but also in breaking down the barriers we might unwittingly construct. Let us continue to share love and spread peace.
