Natural capital research 📋 A new report highlights the growing appetite for #naturalcapital investments in institutional portfolios, with half of UK asset owners saying they already invest in natural capital or will do so within the next 18 months. How scenario thinking for tomorrow can guide portfolios today. At yesterday's Asset Class Outlook Roundtable during the Portfolio Construction Forum, Director Jonathan Ramsay and a panel of experts Graham McNamara, Ram Rasaratnam, Isaac Poole PhD, CIMA® and Emmanuel Sharef delved into how four potential economic scenarios could shape global markets in the coming years. They were: 1. AI/Energy Driven Productivity Boom: Innovations in AI and other technologies could significantly enhance productivity, potentially boosting real incomes and reducing social tensions. 2. Muddle Through: With a cautious approach, central banks might tolerate moderate inflation levels without taking decisive action, introducing a degree of policy uncertainty. 3. Bearish Debt Deflation Spiral: A mix of financial shocks and geopolitical tensions could precipitate a severe deflationary spiral, adversely affecting global economies. 4. Stagflation Scenario: Loose financial policies might temporarily bolster the economy but could lead to inflationary pressures that trigger a recession. The panel rated the 'Muddle Through' scenario as the most probable. Yet, as insights from the previous year remind us, these scenarios are just tools to help us think about what could happen, not predictions of what will happen. Through this uncertainty, diversification becomes a powerful approach.  By spreading and dynamically managing investments across different types of assets and locations, portfolios can better manage risks and take advantage of opportunities. The Science Based Targets Initiative on 27th August 2024, released their ‘Building Sector Target Setting Criteria’ that provides a framework for companies and financial institutions within the building value chain to set 1.5°C-aligned emissions reduction targets. The guidance aims to accelerate the building sectors alignment to net zero and help the industry overcome the current #climate challenges. The Buildings sector is responsible for over a quarter of #energy related #emissions and is deeply impacted by the climate crisis. The SBTi’s new framework takes a whole building approach, covering all energy consumption and fugitive emissions. It calls for an end of fossil fuel equipment installations, the #retrofitting of inefficient buildings, and reductions in operational and upfront embodied emissions. It’s happening! Sustainable and ESG portfolios will soon be regulated in the UK. The Financial Conduct Authority is now consulting on a swathe of new rules - to be implemented on a relatively short timeline - to ensure that all ‘sustainable’ portfolios are, in fact, sustainable. In short: ✅ The rules cover both model portfolios and bespoke portfolios. ✅ A portfolio that’s marketed as ESG or sustainable (or similar) must satisfy the criteria for one of four labels - Sustainability Focus, Sustainability Improvers, Sustainability Impact or Sustainability Mixed Goals - or managers must justify to consumers why it’s marketed as sustainable but remains unlabelled. ✅ Labelled or otherwise, managers must provide a 2-pager to consumers, containing the portfolio’s investment strategy, key sustainability metrics and KPIs. ✅ Further, lengthier disclosures must be made to consumers pre-contractually and annually. ✅ There are additional requirements on firms of over £5bn AUM. The new rules are based on similar rules for retail funds, which come into force this year. Once again the UK is taking the lead on labels and naming, going further even than the EU. If successful, we can expect these rules to make their way in some form around the world. Consumers should benefit as labels become more widely understood and universalised across the investment industry, building trust and confidence in sustainable investing… At least that’s the theory. The proposed timeline is significantly compressed, with requirements building from December 2024.
