Latest Kantar figures landed this week I normally start with the ‘Big 4’ but starting bottom up this time! Symbols and independents struggling for growth as the consumer continues to look to save money through loyalty based schemes in the mults or EDLP in the discount world. It’s been a competitive year for branded promotions (including digital campaigns gathering momentum)seeing growth in that area almost double private label. Let’s see if there is a reversal of this trend in the new year as customers become more budget focused. I have commented over the last few periods on Asda’s decline which continues with further loss of market share and sales 1% down. This is compounded by the news this week of HO redundancies and potential data breaches. Morrisons market share stays flat as they continue their transformation and sit in between the discounters. Lidl hot on their heels have the strongest bricks and mortar growth. Co-op/iceland and Waitrose propping up the rest with Ocado showing almost double digit growth in online. Finally Tesco and Sainsbury’s sales up 4.6% and 4.4% respectively showing their overall dominance at the top of the league taking nearly half of market share between them.

Charity Of The Year (COTY) programmes often waste a huge amount of charity sector time - and in March this year, we finally got some evidence to see just how much time they actually waste. One of the UK's biggest COTY programmes was up for grabs. When the company let the unsuccessful applicants know they'd been unsuccessful... they accidentally hit reply all. We can deduce from the email that 85 charities applied, spending an estimated 255 working days (more than working year!) on the application. To make matters worse, the charities that were put through to pitch stage... were the same 4 as the last time. When applying for COTY programmes, the fundamental question we need to ask is 'can we actually win this?' - and if your answer is anything less than 'absolutely yes', you should not apply. If it's anything less than that, you should be focussing on companies where you know people - and I promise you, there are companies where you know people. If you want help finding those companies, or you just want to grab a drink to complain about COTYs, we'd love to hear from you.
