No other development has had a greater impact on contemporary world politics than the rise of China. It has altered the global balance of power and triggered a discourse centred on the inevitability of a conflict between an existing power and an emerging one. However, a contrary and more optimistic view is that both China and the United States (US) will rationally manage their relations and coexist, impelled by their interdependence and considerations of mutually assured destruction. Both have a stake in the present global order; China being its beneficiary and the US as its architect. However, both will have to agree to a type of framework which defers to each other’s interests and sensitivities, finds cooperative solutions to universal challenges, shuns zero-sum-approaches and works for global peace and security, writes Masood Khalid

Defamation laws are being misused around the world to silence critical reporting. Across Asia, more societies are falling off a demographic cliff with plunging birthrates and rapidly ageing population pyramids that oblige them to make a virtue out of necessity. Is the "silver economy" a pot of gold? PING AN estimates China's one to be worth almost 1T USD today. World Data Lab projects Japan's will be worth 1.1T by 2030. Much of this will be around the needs and wants of daily living, hence the food and nutraceutical sectors have much to gain. This includes both commercial and community-based solutions that support seniors #growing and preparing their own food, and managing their nutritive and #nutraceutical intake. The #silvereconomy should support a #silversociety where elders have sufficiency, community, a holistic healthspan, dignity, purpose, and agency. And oh, there's money to be made in it also, as well as tapering the fiscal burden on the state and younger generations.

On November 6, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy outlined a proposal to extend the UK’s media mergers regime, ensuring it adapts to the digital landscape and safeguards media freedom and plurality. This reform will allow greater oversight of mergers involving online news sites and news magazines, broadening the regime beyond traditional TV, radio, and print newspapers. Key Points: - Expanded Oversight: For the first time, mergers involving online-only news platforms and weekly or monthly news publications—such as HuffPost, The Independent, and The Economist—will be subject to public interest scrutiny, empowering the Culture Secretary to intervene where necessary. - Future-Proofing Media Laws: As news consumption shifts online, the proposal aims to maintain a diverse, high-quality news landscape, ensuring UK laws are relevant for today’s media environment. - Supporting Media Freedom: The consultation will gather public input on updating the regime under the Enterprise Act 2002, enabling interventions that protect accuracy and freedom of expression without imposing editorial regulation. - Proportionate Approach: The proposed changes strike a balance, reflecting modern news habits without undue pressure on businesses, and uphold the UK’s commitment to media plurality and a free press. Pending consultation, the updated framework will proceed via secondary legislation, ensuring a resilient and inclusive media regime aligned with today’s digital consumption trends.
