🎬 As part of a new video series featuring ten ECDPM experts on our 2024 highlights, Alfonso Medinilla gives a brief overview of all the ECDPM work on green industrialisation, and what awaits next year for green industrial partnerships. With green industrialisation creating key opportunities for developing countries, ECDPM believes there is a major case for linking their economic transformation objectives with Europe's accelerated decarbonisation agenda: creating mutually beneficial partnerships. ☀️ Every year, International Migrants Day reminds us of the invaluable contributions migrants make and the challenges they face across the globe. But today, we’re pausing to listen. Along with AspirE and PACES, we invite you to step beyond the numbers and into the personal experiences of (aspiring) migrants who took part in our research. Through a series of reflections, we uncover the courage it takes to share one’s story, the trust needed to engage with researchers and the power these narratives hold in shaping policies and sparking public conversations. 🔗 Dive into the human side of migration research by exploring these three powerful stories: → Part 1: Interview with Abel 👉 https://lnkd.in/dHAU7JZW → Part 2: Interview with Flor 👉 https://lnkd.in/dnP84yCR → Part 3: Interview with Felicity 👉 https://lnkd.in/dUVkk68X #WorldMigrantsDay #Migration #MigrationResearch #MigrationPolicy Université libre de Bruxelles, ECDPM 🌍, International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam, AMADPOC, Elizade University, European University Institute, UM6P - University Mohammed VI Polytechnic, Kiel Institute for the World Economy, Middlesex University

With Hanne Louise Knaepen, ECDPM Katherine Browne, SEI Mithika Mwenda, PhD, Director, PACJA Martha Getachew Bekele, Development Transformations (DevTransform) Cristina Rumbaitis del Rio, UNFoundation Peter Wittoeck, Head of Department Climate Change, Belgium Chiara Martinelli, Director, Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe Julius Ngoma, Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) Julien Desmedt, DG CLIMA, EC Katy Harris, SEI & Director, Adaptation without Borders 🤖 AI Summary 🤖 The COP 29 debrief focused on the disappointment surrounding the lack of progress on adaptation finance and the need for greater EU-Africa collaboration on this issue. Key concerns raised included: - The lack of a dedicated sub-goal for adaptation within the new climate finance goal. - The insufficiency of the overall financial commitments, which fell short of the $1.3 trillion requested by developing countries. - Existing barriers to accessing adaptation finance, including lengthy processes, complex technical requirements, and a lack of transparency in accounting. CSO representatives, notably from the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), stressed the importance of connecting global policy processes with the needs of communities experiencing the direct impacts of climate change. They also highlighted the need for greater accountability and transparency in the use of climate funds. Several speakers emphasized that adaptation finance should not be treated in isolation. Instead, they called for a more holistic approach that considers broader issues such as debt relief, tax justice, and reform of the international financial architecture. Despite the disappointments of COP 29, there was also some optimism about potential opportunities for progress in 2025. These include: - The Financing for Development Conference in Spain - South Africa's G20 Presidency - The upcoming EU-Africa Summit These events provide platforms to reinvigorate the adaptation finance agenda and strengthen collaboration between Europe and Africa. CSOs see a crucial role for themselves in pushing for progress on adaptation finance, both by holding governments accountable and by building stronger alliances with partners in Europe to elevate the issue on the international agenda.

Despite the African Union's increased visibility and agency in recent years, there remains a significant gap in public knowledge regarding its activities. The African Union Yearbook aims to systematically address that gap, serving as a vital reference for in-depth research and evidence-based decision-making. For the third year in a row I was honoured to be asked to contribute the chapter on Regional Integration and Trade, focused particularly on AfCFTA in the AU 'Year of Accelerating AfCFTA Implementation'. 📝 Steel production accounts for 8% of global emissions, making green production a priority for Europe's climate neutrality ambitions. But with European steelmakers at a crossroads, imports from North Africa could be essential. Such a strategy could alleviate pressures on European steelmakers from high energy prices, diversify supply chains and strengthen Euro-Mediterranean political and economic integration. Read the paper 👉 https://bit.ly/3ZOuD0n For North African countries, it represents an opportunity to attract green investment, develop local hydrogen economies and access the EU’s greening market. However, political sensitivities around industrial job security in Europe and the challenges of financing green industries in North Africa complicate collaboration. Poorva Karkare and Alfonso Medinilla conclude that a balanced approach, integrating local and imported decarbonised steel inputs, can enhance competitiveness, create regional synergies, and scale up global markets for green industrial products. Key recommendations include fostering interdependence through policy alignment, derisking initial investments and ensuring equitable benefits for all stakeholders.
