COP29 started this week, with the intersection of sustainability and technology very clear. Matthew Bradley, our Sustainability Director at Capgemini in the UK, has written an insightful article, featured on Defra’s Sustainable ICT blog, reflecting on the recent COP16 in Colombia. COP16 is part of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) focusing primarily on the biodiversity crisis. Colombia is home to around 10% of the planet’s species so it was great to read that the country has committed to conserving 30% of its land and marine areas by 2030. Technology can and should play a vital role in preserving biodiversity with AI, Big Data, and other technological innovations driving conservation efforts, including analysing large datasets, predicting trends, and identifying areas needing urgent conservation efforts. The tech sector absolutely has a further role to play by promoting sustainability in the design of products, ensuring longer lifespans and environmentally friendly materials, and enforcing and following regulations and policies that reduce environmental impact. This is more important than ever. Covering 4.36 million square miles — or less than 10% of the Earth’s ice-free land — intact forests are our last defence against biodiversity loss and the climate crisis. Since joining Capgemini, I’ve been impressed by how our teams are helping clients navigate industry disruption and turn it into a competitive advantage. Our work with the UK’s National Grid ESO is a great example of that. ESO partnered with Capgemini to rapidly scale and deploy a first-of-its-kind ‘demand flexibility service’ that enabled businesses and households to moderate their electricity usage during peak periods. After a rapid four-month deployment, the solution was launched across 31 energy providers and 1.6 million households and businesses. The results speak for themselves. The service delivered a reduction in electricity demand equal to the energy needed to power 200,000 households for a year, and significantly lowered CO2 emissions. Innovations like this are key for supporting the UK's energy transition and making the industry more resilient to disruption. The model holds huge potential for the future of energy in the UK, and comes at an important time for ESO, with the National Grid having just agreed to sell ESO to the government.
