Bad Comments ❌ Too many comments are almost worse than no comments. They inflate the code and typically overwhelm the person working on it. Some examples of what a bad comment is... Nonlocal Info - Commenting about a bit of code that the comment is not near. Commented out code - This often remains in the software for no real reason and nobody dares to delete it because somebody at some point thought it might be needed. It bloats the code and is 'probably' never going to be used. Redundant or Misleading Comments - Usually done with a good intention at the time but the control might have changed over time and the comment is no longer serving its original purpose. . .delete them. There are many more to be honest, but these are some of the most common. I have added a link below in comments to a video showing some of the actual comments on the Simpsons Hit and Run game for the PlayStation - Hilarious this even went on at that level 😂 😂 if you can spare 2 minutes watch it.

Now that the Microsoft AFO UK redundancy consultancy period has concluded, I can start to share details of where people are headed. Firstly there are people not actively job hunting for a software engineering role. - A decent number of people are taking the opportunity to go travelling for an extended period - A few folk are looking at changing career - e.g. starting a masters course, going into teaching, etc. - A bigger chunk have decided to take a couple of months off and begin job hunting in September. They'll have an easier time then, because they will have a stronger network.  - And finally let’s not forget the few that are still processing the shock; spare a thought for them. For the majority who are actively job-seeking though, early results are in. I'm thinking of it as like election night, there is excitement around those initial results, and we can start to form narratives, but they won't necessarily reflect the final picture. The job market dynamics will likely shift after the summer, interview process lengths vary by company size, and my guess is that those taking a relaxed approach may find themselves in different roles compared to the early movers. Nevertheless, here's the landscape so far: - Startups, with available funding, have moved the quickest  - Medium-sized companies are beginning to make offers. - Larger companies, with longer cycles, are interviewing, but not yet complete. Except Nvidia, who have hired a big bunch. I think I'm coming to realise that one of my more unusual traits as a programmer - and one that has led me to preferring processes like TDD, is I'm obsessed with how code *looks and feels* before I can even make it work. My design process is more "how do I want to express this concept" than "how do I execute this task". Once I find the right form for a concept, I then work backwards and drive out tests that help me make it work. I think a lot of people do the opposite, and try make something work before finding its form. This is reflected in the phrase "working, readable, fast - in that order", but I think I've landed on "expressive, working, fast" ordering now. I'm not making a particular value judgement here - but I think finding the shape in everything is an aesthetic tactic you need if you're going to build software other programmers will consume. It's the design work.

It's not all non-symbolic AI... I presented today to Accord Project Technology Working Group on recent enhancements to the Template Engine and how TypeScript expressions within templates are compiled and evaluated. Accord Project uses TypeScript over Concerto types (with Concerto also compiled to TypeScript) to provide type-safe logic/calculations for templates; ensuring that a wide array of programming errors are caught at template compilation time, not at runtime. #typesafety #soundness #typescript #templating #legaltech
