The Bank of England has cut interest rates to 5 per cent, the first time reduction since March 2020. The Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted by a majority of 5-4 to reduce Bank Rate by 0.25 percentage points. Four members preferred to maintain Bank Rate at 5.25 per cent. In light of today's news of Bank of England cutting interest rathers to 5%, we thought we'd share some key takeaways about this first drop since March 2020! 👇🏻 - Cuts Bank Rate 25bp to 5%, starting easing cycle. Vote 5-4 (Greene, Haskel, Mann and Pill) in finely balance decision - Do not expect a rapid rate cutting campaign. Policy remains restrictive and will do for sufficiently long (to squeeze persistent inflation pressure) - Domestic inflationary pressures remain elevated. The upcoming labour market data on Tuesday is poised to be the week's most critical economic indicator, potentially influencing the Bank of England's (BoE) September rate decision. Bank staff are anticipating further cooling in wage growth, projecting regular pay growth to drop to 4.9% from June's 5.4%, and total pay growth to decline to 4.2% from 4.5%. The unemployment rate is another key figure to watch, with the BoE expecting an increase to 4.5% from 4.2%, which would mark a 3-year high. July's claimant count change data, showing the highest figure since May 2020, could support this projection. However, it's important to note that claimant count figures are often subject to heavy revisions. Meanwhile, third-party data from KPMG and REC aligns with the cooling labour market narrative, as vacancies fell for a 9th consecutive month. Staff salary inflation also continues to slow to a 3.5-year low, corroborating the trends seen in recent services PMI data. It's a sad state of affairs when blame culture overrides innovation. We've all been there at one time or another - putting your head above the parapet to advocate for a great new product or a better customer experience. I've been very fortunate to work with supportive forward-thinking leaders who have taken a balanced view of risk vs reward in the pursuit of delivering for the customer (and the business). Clearly, our research shows that most innovation leaders aren't that fortunate, so they need a way of de-risking innovation. Perhaps SaaScada can help?
