Whatever you may think about the politics at play here it’s clear that #UKGovernmentDepartments are under extreme fiscal pressure and more “efficiencies” will need to be found in the near term.   Not surprising then that we’ve just signed another Government Department as our latest UK customer where we helped them significantly reduce OpEx by replacing OEM software maintenance charges with our more cost effective and higher value service.   Looking forward to helping more public sector organisations over the coming months.

It was great to take part in the recent WIG event, where key stakeholders, across the sectors, came together to talk about how important it is for us all to collaborate to achieve net zero and to address the sustainability challenges, particularly those related to IT.   Chris Howes spoke about the importance of us all taking responsibility for this. He also talked passionately about the work of the Government Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA), an Alliance that Sopra Steria Ltd has recently joined. The mission is to encourage collaboration and sharing best practice to enable us all to make an impact on the journey to achieve net zero.   It is clear to us all in this industry, that with the growth of Artificial intelligence this may have a material impact on our net zero ambitions , but the potential impacts of AI are both positive and negative. We have seen recent announcements that four US firms have announced plans to invest over £6BN in UK-based data centres to support the growing demand for AI. In addition to this other investments will take the total investment in UK data centres to over £25 billion since July. So with more computing , data storage and cooling requirements, this endangers our goals to achieve net zero.   So, what are the positives? We have to find ways we can embrace AI technologies, roll them out faster and ensure that the solutions we design using machine learning models and algorithms can help us address the glut of redundant data we host and improve the collaboration across government department to share our data, not to duplicate it.   At Sopra Steria we are working with government departments to help deliver data strategies, utilising AI technologies and solutions to address data cleansing, and to reduce the risk of stored but redundant data. These actions will result in ensuring the positive impacts of AI will be seen in future years to come.
