When working with Amazon MSK, developers are interested in accessing the service locally. This allows developers to test their application with a Kafka cluster that has the same configuration as production and provides an identical infrastructure to the actual environment without needing to run Kafka locally. This post presents a practical approach to accessing your Amazon MSK environment for development purposes through a bastion host using a Secure Shell (SSH) tunnel (a commonly used secure connection method). We just acquired WarpStream at Confluent, and I couldn't be more excited! But why? There's a lot of reasons to love the Cloud, and I've seen huge successes within customers like Curve and Funding Circle UK who have jumped headfirst into Confluent Cloud, but sometimes there are challenges that end up slowing down full adoption of a fully managed service. Confluent Platform offers an alternative for hosting your own data streaming platform, but the overhead of managing this can be a burden for smaller teams. WarpStream's BYOC option will allow us to help those stuck in the middle. Whether its a sovereignty issue when deploying in a new territory, or edge deployments where an easier management saves hiring another engineer, the option to have control of your data plane while Confluent manage the system control plane will allow businesses to accelerate their adoption of a #DataStreamingPlatform across their business. There's a bright future ahead having Warpstream in the team, and we're looking forward to seeing what comes next!

It's disappointing to see the news that the CMA has chosen to renew its contract with AWS – despite currently investigating the impact that hyperscaler anti-competitive practices are having on UK cloud.   In all honesty, it’s a huge blow to all those operating in UK cloud. This could have been a way to promote competition in the UK market and support the challenger and homegrown providers, rather than signing the biggest deal yet with the hyperscaler provider.   I shared my thoughts on the situation with Christine Horton, who explored the impact of agreements, like the UK’s One Government Value Agreement 2.0 (OGVA), have had on public sector IT spending.   There’s an election on the horizon and whoever’s in No.10 this time next year needs to be considering this with some urgency.    Take a look at Christine’s article in Channel Futures here: https://lnkd.in/ek3H4743

HMG complex PaaS migration to AWS Containers went remarkably smoothly. I think that this was due to good simple design decisions made for each component. And a structured well planned migration sequence. One day to go! I'll be attending the Amazon Web Services (AWS) London Summit tomorrow. If you'll be there and fancy a coffee chat, feel free to drop me a message. AI and data have taken over much of the agenda - it reminds me of the days when Cloud migration and '2020 strategy' seemed to be 70% of my professional news feed (I wonder if we'll see a revival in 2030 strategies next year? Brace yourselves..). Whilst there's no shortage of AI content and events, and big variations in what's worth your time, this looks to be a particularly good line up of focused expert sessions and some fun hands on labs. The recent announcement by HashiCorp about its impending acquisition by IBM came as a bit of a surprise, but in hindsight - not so much. I'd reckon any cloud provider wants to become the sole supply chain when it comes to cloud infrastructure - this is something Amazon, Google and Microsoft have done with varying levels of success. A significant component of that supply chain is IaC - if you're able to natively define how engineers consume and interact with your cloud, then you truly own that chain. Again, something all three hyperscalers are trying to do, by releasing Kubernetes-native controllers that treat cloud resources as Kubernetes objects. Now that's cool stuff, pretty useful - but IBM has gone after everyone's IaC supply chain, which suddenly propels them towards a position where they will again have to appear to be an engineer-facing company. In my opinion it didn't go that well with RedHat, so I hope they do better here. If I were to engage in a fantasy, I'd imagine that IBM leadership responsible for this acquisition would take steps to mend the gap between HashiCorp and OpenTofu. I think we can all agree that entire situation could have been handled a lot better. I'd reckon it's actually in IBM's best interests to announce that Terraform(and other HashiCorp products) will be licensed under the MIT or Apache licenses. I also believe it's a brilliant idea for these folks to initiate conversations with OpenTofu, to bring everything back under the same, community-driven umbrella. Def very curious to see how this plays out next.

Today I read about a mistake that was made at Google cloud: https://lnkd.in/eCPshqsU. Luckily whitesky.cloud users are protected for such a mistake through the Recyle Bin feature. When deleting any resource, it is only "soft" deleted, and it goes to the "Recycle Bin". Also users do not have care about it as they do not have "empty" it themselves. After 7 days, items are removed automatically. So, you can image if the Pension fund had been hosted in a whitesky.cloud private managed cloud, people will have noticed the deletion within the 7 days time span protection. #cloud #privatecloud #edgecloud #safe

IMHO, not that anyone asked, but I do feel k8s is a stronger investment than AWSs unnecessarily proprietary ECS system. Granted I am a proponent of agnostic cloud. But i genuinely think a well set up k8s cluster can give better flexibility and better development of skillset. And if you do EKS I’d suggest node groups over fargate. There are things you lose with EKS and fargate over allowing k8s to manage nodes like it wants to. Free advise. Though I can send you my Venmo for tips. :D #ecs #eks #k8s #advisenooneaskedfor
