Sad to not be in London this week for the #AWSSummit today, particularly given the new announcements by the RAISE team from Capgemini Data and AI which continue to focus on working with AWS on the growing challenge of LLM Operations, whether this is onboarding new models like Anthropic's Claude 3 trilogy of Haiku, Sonnet and Opus, the new Meta Llama 3 models or the work with Databricks and Amazon Web Services (AWS) on the operational scaling and support for complex RAG, Guardrail and Evaluation support there is much to be talked about with the team about how we continue to enable the optimization of the whole AWS AI stack, from Bedrock and Q right down to the "physical" AI infrastructure. One of the really cool things that has happened in the past 4(!) months since it was soft launched and the whole ONE MONTH since it was formally launched is the development of two new optimization approaches for models one from Weiwei Feng that uses Deep Learning on evaluation metrics to do performance & cost based optimization, and the other, Agentic, approach being used by Marek Sowa and Alaina Case. I'm really not sure how Mark Oost and Bikash Dash are keeping up with all these new developments and releases. What is absolutely clear is that the field of LLM Operations is one that requires companies to think differently about operations, in terms of what failure means, what security means, what cost management means and what release and upgrade cycles are about. The field is moving far too fast for traditional approaches and processes and everyone needs the sort of industrialization that RAISE, AWS and Databricks are providing. One day to go! I'll be attending the Amazon Web Services (AWS) London Summit tomorrow. If you'll be there and fancy a coffee chat, feel free to drop me a message. AI and data have taken over much of the agenda - it reminds me of the days when Cloud migration and '2020 strategy' seemed to be 70% of my professional news feed (I wonder if we'll see a revival in 2030 strategies next year? Brace yourselves..). Whilst there's no shortage of AI content and events, and big variations in what's worth your time, this looks to be a particularly good line up of focused expert sessions and some fun hands on labs. Given the uncertainties and lack of clarity in the business community around the CDO job, experienced CDOs exhibited a surprising amount of consensus on the key issues they face when surveyed. And although CDO job tenures have been historically short, they exhibited little or no insecurity about their jobs. One CDO noted, “Our company is completely data-driven. We are seeing incremental improvements and quantum leaps in performance and productivity since Gen AI took us by surprise. The accessibility of AI tools has raised consumer expectations to higher standards. They now demand hyper-personalised experiences that also feel highly conversational. While this creates incredible opportunities for innovation, it also puts immense pressure on enterprises to deliver increasingly sophisticated experiences. But the human element in AI will always remain crucial. The most effective technologies will understand each person’s needs, context, and behaviours, then deliver personalised, accurate, and trusted experiences, while also optimising for business outcomes.
