The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) and The Open University recently revealed the results of a survey exploring the current working landscape for businesses, and some of the figures shared in an article by HR News on the subject were quite eye-opening. Businesses must invest in their people, and not just for today but for the future too. It is vital that our people feel valued in the workplace, and they in turn will feel happier at work and more productive. It is time for businesses to re-think their talent acquisition strategies, and embracing skills-based hiring is one crucial step we should all take. Sustainable growth depends on businesses addressing skills gaps and investing in their future. We recently held a session at Aylesbury Grammar School where we shared the importance of highlighting skills on CVs. We believe that it is never too early to think about the skills that you are building everyday and the difference that they can make. It is important for employers to recognise the value that these skills can bring to their organisation.

Have you ever wondered what an outsourced HR consultant actually does for a SME business? Last week, I had a call with a client who is managing a sensitive absence case. We discussed the approach to take with the employee to ensure support, while also setting some boundaries and agreeing next steps. There’s many elements and we worked through each one, picking our way through the dependencies and agreeing just the next logical step. Later, I got an email asking for more help: “here’s my notes but I am struggling to draft the email we talked about to invite X to the meeting” I drafted an email and shared it with the client within an hour. “That’s perfect” 👌 My job is to keep you compliant, supporting you to do the right thing and explaining what you CAN do, not what you can’t. 😎How’s your Monday going? Got some interesting comments on my ‘Old HR get in the bin’ post…. First up, I am not slagging off my fellow professionals. But I am slagging off old style HR. Things like: 👎Blanket mandates 👎Controlling objective setting 👎Policing of objective attainment 👎Removing the ability of managers to manage 👎Pursuing IIP as a ✅ box exercise when your culture is rotten as your people are exhausted and under resourced 🤷‍♀️If the stats are showing an uptick in employee turnover, burnout and reduced engagement then it’s clear all the above isn’t working. Yes, it might be the mandate of Senior Management handed to HR (like a poison chalice) but if you ignore what’s happening in front of your very eyes then things will never change.. Instead: ✅Talk to your employees - find out what they need. Agree what you can deliver, how and when - get them involved… ✅Empower managers to have proper and constructive dialogue with their team ✅Trust managers to manage ✅Have a framework, but make sure that within the framework there is scope to be able to respond to varying needs. Nuanced as opposed to one sized ✅Consider who is most important to the business: Shareholders, Clients or Employees (clue all 3 are but usually there is a focus only on one or two) 😎Anyway, as you were. HR top tip 💡 Review your Employee Files! When was the last time you did this? If it’s been a while, here are some basics to consider; 🟡 Right to work - the potential penalty for employing an illegal worker is up to £45,000 for the first offence and up to £60,000 for repeated offences. The best way to ensure you never face this is to check right to work documents and keep copies on file ✅ 🟡 Next of Kin details - in an emergency, who do you need to contact? You might already have these on file, but it's also worth checking periodically if any contact details have changed ✅ 🟡 Employee contact details - if your employee didn't turn up to work, then how would you contact them? Make sure you have up to date contact details on file and again regularly check these are up to date ✅ 🟡 Contract of employment or statement of terms - make sure you keep a copy on file! So often I find this vital document missing, either because contracts were never issued, or the employer forgot to keep a copy on file ✅ 🟡 Records of any letters, notes or any other relevant documents - the best thing you can do with these is attach them to the employee file so that you don't lose track of any important information ✅ 🟡 Copies of any statutory requirements or qualifications required for the role - driving licenses, SIA licenses etc. If the role requires these, then make sure you have copies on file ✅ This list is not exhaustive, but covers the basics and bare minimum...... have you spotted any gaps in your files? 🤔 Need some help or have any documents missing❓ just let me know and I’ll get you sorted 🌟
