🚢 Exciting Announcement: The Dark Tide - A Revolutionary AI-Created Short Film 🚢 I’m thrilled to share The Dark Tide, a short film I’ve created that explores the tragic journey of the Irish Coffin Ships during the Great Famine—entirely crafted using AI! 🎥✨ This project marks a new chapter in storytelling, leveraging cutting-edge AI technology for everything from the cinematic visuals to the music and voiceover. 🎶🎙️ Although it’s still far from perfect, but about 95% of first I made generations were used in the video. Regenerating some shots could have probably helped cure some errors… but it will only get better from here! The film offers a harrowing glimpse into a pivotal moment in Irish history, where families endured unimaginable hardships, risking their lives on overcrowded, disease-ridden ships in search of survival. The power of AI allowed us to recreate this story with an unprecedented level of detail, atmosphere, and emotion. Public policy problems do not fit neatly into the scope of individual government departments. As public sector teams wait to find out if their bids for funding at the Budget were successful, Matt Edgar’s latest fortnightnote beautifully captures what I think is the single biggest problem with the way government priorities are funded: “the urgency of cross-team and cross-organisation collaboration has never been stronger, yet the pressures to perform and meet isolated targets set in parallel plans constantly pull natural allies apart”. Here’s hoping for a more inventive allocation of funds this time round, to give teams the flexibility and freedom they need to make a difference through genuine cross-organisation collaboration.

Radio Sensors track the link from light to mood💡 Lynne Green from Kirk House in Belfast is our third inspiring example. Kate Turley of Belfast University and Lloyd Crawford of Skyjoy approached Lynne with an idea for a research project to combine AI-powered radio sensors and lighting to explore the connection between light levels and a range of measures including sleep, quality of life, mood and social isolation. Lynne noticed a significant change in the mood and behaviour of the residents following the installation, with reduced sundowning and an increase in communication. These observations were confirmed by Kate’s analysis: time in bed, mood and social engagement, measured thanks to the ability to track movement using the radio sensors all improved within the first weeks of the study, a trend that has continued over time. The research will now extend over three years to explore the impact of seasons on these effects. Lynne is clear that all residential care homes should have circadian lighting. This is where Kitt Medical all started. 4 years ago, I graduated from university in the peak of COVID. I decided to put together a campaign video for my final year industrial design project 'ana.' Things I didn't have at the time: - the faintest idea of how to build a business... - knowledge of the pharmaceutical or compliance landscapes... - a co-founder, team, mentors or investors... all I had was an idea to make something 'just like a defibrillator, but for allergies'. There's a lot wrong with this video… It was the very definition of overpromising (and unbeknown to me at the time breached a few levels of compliance… and a certain international convention) but by putting it out there into the world, I: - refined the idea into a tangible concept - attracted early investors, partners and my co-founder James - gained critical feedback and encouragement from so many people. Maybe it's time to remake this with our Anaphyaxis Kitt and up-to-date, compliance friendly wording... My project, SALTBUOY, has recently been selected as one of the top six finalists nationwide in the UK and Republic of Ireland for the Design Innovation in Plastics award organised by The Worshipful Company of Horners and IOM3 (Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining). 🎉 SALTBUOY is an oceanographic data buoy powered entirely by salt-water batteries. Existing data buoys are powered by solar PV panels and lithium-ion batteries, costing upwards of £140,000. Maintenance costs can reach upwards of £20,000, for a single fix alone. Solar PV panels require maintenance on a regular basis for a number of reasons, mostly corrosion (+ seagull ‘stuff’). For some single-use applications, data buoy’s are deliberately sunk in the ocean, which releases toxic chemicals into the ocean, mostly from batteries. As an alternative, SALTBUOY utilises the constant supply of seawater to power its collection of oceanographic data, so it’s 100% powered by off-grid energy. Its salt-water batteries can last roughly 5,000 cycles—10x longer than existing data buoy batteries, which typically last 500 cycles. SALTBUOY is also made of 100% (1st gen) regrind polyethylene, and can be deployed by a single individual—as opposed to multi-person deployment, which is quite common. SALTBUOY is also a much cheaper alternative due to a number of reasons, including tooling costs (e.g., rotational moulding). Oceanographic data is crucial for understanding climate patterns, marine ecosystems, and predicting weather events, guiding sustainable resource management and coastal planning, to name a few. SALTBUOY operates in this market... one that enables all of us to understand the state of our oceans. But the systems that work to understand our oceans (e.g., data buoys) should protect them too. This hasn't really been the case, until now. I’ll be dedicating this project to the late Robin Jones, who sadly passed away in 2022. He was instrumental to my decision for pursuing BSc Product Design at London South Bank University, and he was also heavily involved in the DIP award. As I approach the end of my final year studies here at LSBU, this is my way of expressing my gratitude and thanks for his influence. More news to come, so stay updated! 🥳
