I’ve thought long and hard about posting this but decided it’s the right thing to do. I was recently informed about the day rate for Ecom stylists for a large London based studio. Between £120 and £150 per day. Let’s break that down. £120 per day - minus 19% tax , minus travel 1-3 travel card £9.60, and let’s say £10 for lunch, that’s an overall earning of £77.60. Let’s assume the hours are 9am - 6pm - 8 hours including lunch. £77.60 divided by 8 hours is £9.60 per hour. The London living wage per hour is £13.15. The sad truth about these figures is that depite the dramatic rise in the cost of living (food, rent, utilities, childcare are they highest they’ve ever been) the day rates in the creative industries remain the same or lower than TEN years ago. The industry is quite literally imploding itself, creatives simply cannot afford to survive. The incomings can never keep up with the outgoings, creating a constant deficit. If experienced creatives cannot survive what hope does the next wave have? Be great to open the lines of communication on this, from all professional’s, and have an honest conversation about that state of the industry as it stands, perhaps even creating some postive from this. #freelance #creatives #stylists #photographers #dayrates #costofliving

Let’s have a look! 🤩 📈 Pandora's Q3 profits rose 6.8% to £110m, with sales up 9.5% to £682m, driven by its successful transformation from a charm bracelet specialist into a full jewellery brand. The company saw strong results in personalisation services, with engraving sales doubling during the quarter. 🛋 IKEA reported a 4% increase in operating profit to £1.9bn (€2.3bn) for FY2024, despite a decline in sales. The furniture giant strategically reduced product prices by an average of 15%, enabling retailers to offer 10% lower prices to customers. Ikea has plans for further price cuts, aiming to restore affordability after the 2021 price increases driven by rising raw material costs. 🛍 Asda reported Q3 revenue down 2.5% to £5.3bn, with like-for-like sales falling 4.8%. UK takes another step towards end of recession "Gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.1% in February, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), despite retail being impacted by record-breaking wet weather. The UK made the incremental step towards a recession-free economy in the face of early 2024 being the fourth wettest start to the year since records began. The 0.1% climb matched City economists’ forecasts after growth in January was revised up from 0.2% to 0.3%. The ONS said: "The largest negative contribution to services growth in February 2024 came from wholesale and retail trade." Following on from our positive view of US electronic stores on Friday, today we examine the economic vagaries of US footwear retailers where sales growth currently runs at -5% y/y, deviating sharply from the 5.4% long-term mean topline annual pace. It is but one of 90 individual illustrations of what is happening within the US economy; across the breadth of manufacturing and consumer sectors. The data in chart 3 is the trinity of price of sale, cost of sales and volume of output. Chart 4 provides more detailed cost and price dynamics. Chart 6 shows how over past 18 months or so, employment growth within the retail subsector is out kilter with demand for shoes which in turn has acted as a drag on productivity. It is only recently that the pace of hourly wage growth has begun to slow, as footwear retailers have moved to manage lower their unit labour costs. Sector margins remain however under severe pressure as companies head into 3Q’24. In being specific to detailed sectors within an economy, the QuantMetriks analysis can be used to anticipate ‘surprises’ in earnings of listed corporates operating in a particular market or across a number of them. Surprises that is, compared to consensual ‘market/analyst’ expectations. The QM team systematically runs the ruler of where such corporate earnings misses are likely to hit. This includes brands like Mountain Warehouse, Regatta, ToeZone, and Brave Soul. 👞 Temu is under the spotlight this week after Dr. Martens plc launched a lawsuit accusing Temu of trademark infringement by targeting keywords like “Dr Martens” and “Airway” with their Google ads promoting their boots. 💰 It appears Shein is interested in bidding again to purchase TopShop from ASOS amid the financial struggles ASOS are facing.
