Work soon to begin on £184m expansion at The Oxford Science Park (TOSP) 🏢🏗️ Construction firm Mace has been awarded a £184 million contract to deliver the next expansion phase at Oxford Science Park, The Daubeny Project. The project will see the construction of three new laboratory and office buildings, cementing Oxford's position as a world-leading centre for scientific innovation. The expansion will add 400,500 sq ft of premium laboratory and office space to the park, addressing the critical demand for high-quality facilities in the thriving life sciences sector. Oxford Science Park is majority owned by Magdalen College, University of Oxford, as part of its strategy to support discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship. Morgan Sindall Construction’s Eastern Counties business selected for Norfolk County Council’s (NCC) Major Construction Works Framework. The framework is divided into three lots and Morgan Sindall has been appointed to Lot 2, which is for larger, more complex projects including a mix of refurbishments, remodelling and new-build. Works under Lot 2 will have a value of more than £4.5m and the total value of all projects in this lot over the term is estimated at £300m. Morgan Sindall’s Eastern Counties Area Director, Alister Broadberry, says: "We have worked alongside Norfolk County Council for a number of years on a variety of projects, and to be selected on this framework represents a fantastic opportunity to continue our strong, collaborative relationship." Networking!!!! Some people absolutely love it, thrive at it, and others hate it. Personally I am somewhere in the middle, dread the thought of it but usually enjoy it immensely when I am there. This might seem a strange post from someone who helped set up the Kent branch of Women in Planning and so basically chose to organise these events! But in reality, the thought of meeting lots of new people and trying to make interesting conversation can be pretty scary. Particularly if you are going alone. However, networking can be whatever you want it to be- a coffee with someone you already know to see what they are up to (I rate this not scary at all on the scary scale), all the way up to a huge event where you know nobody (very very scary on the scary scale). It has massive benefits for planners in both the public and private sector. It isn’t all about winning new work, it is about checking in with other planners, seeing what is going on in the world, what other people are experiencing, sharing successes and war stories, and just meeting new people. I also bet that the majority of people at networking events are also feeling some kind of trepidation, no matter how experienced or networked they already are (feel free to comment below to offer me reassurance at baring my soul!). This is a bit of a promotion post for Women in Planning Kent because the purpose of our events is to make talking to other planners (and others in the planning world) a bit less scary. They aren’t ‘aggressive’ networking events- they are a coffee with friends. If you are a bit nervous about coming along, you can always look out for me to speak to- the one who talks a lot because I do actually like meeting new people even if I don’t like the thought of it.

Want an indication of how tight the QS market is? I've been analysing the most recent APC pass list (full report to follow; will keep you all updated). But lets take West Yorkshire as an example. This May/June: 13 passed their APC on the QS Pathway. 3 of those work for Contractors. 10 of those work for Consultancies. Some consultancies just won't consider contractor QSs. From anecdotal data / experience, at least half (if not more) of the 10 working for consultancies, will have received a decent pay rise (for those just past if you don't know what that number should be, drop me a line) and will be content. So that leaves 5 possible target candidates. My conservative estimate is that, in Leeds alone, just in consultancies, there are 20 open vacancies for newly chartered QSs. Now I know you QSs are good with numbers, but some hiring managers are just not doing the maths! These numbers (obviously relative to size of market) are reflected in every major city. What does this mean: ➡ Not all firms will be successful in hiring a newly chartered QS. ➡ Supply and Demand - you will have to pay a premium if you do. ➡ You need to be more flexible / realistic in your hiring.
