Edison Research have released the UK Podcast Consumer Report 2024. It is excellent to see these insights which showcase the transformation of podcasting from an emerging platform to a leading form of modern communication in the media landscape. As detailed in the report, podcasting is growing, highlighting how the mediums’ role in marketing and media strategies will/is becoming more significant. Key takeaways from the report - Podcast listening is at an all-time high: 30% of the UK are weekly podcast listeners. Averaging 5 hours and 27 of listening in a standard week. 18-34-year-olds in the UK are a loyal audience! Most of this age bracket are monthly listeners and 41% are weekly listeners. Top of the charts: Of the UK weekly listener population, podcasts in the top 300 achieve as massive 72% of all listeners. The top 10 podcasts alone are reaching 1/3 of all weekly listeners. The 55+ UK population are listening to podcasts more and more. 28% of this demographic are monthly listeners, up from 20% in 2023. Gen Z make up 38% of all new weekly podcast listeners. One step forward two steps Black? We want to hear your experiences of what it’s like to be Black in PR and comms today. Together with PRWeek UK and Opinium, we are opening our One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey to uncover inequity where it exists, recognise successes in creating a diverse pipeline and retaining talent, and crucially - to provide a benchmark for the industry to make change. The inaugural One Step Forward Two Steps Black survey in 2020 found that almost half of Black communication professionals had never received an internal promotion, with talent having to move to a different agency or company to rise up the ranks.  Has progress been made? The only people that should be charging licensing or usage for creative content is models and actors. This is because their likeness is being attached to a brand. If they’re the face of Tesco for a campaign it’s unlikely Asda are going to hire them so they’re compensated for the effect on their earnings. Any other creative art form should charge accordingly at the start for their skills and experience rather than hold brands to ransom (to use content they’ve already paid for) again in 2 years time. Licensing is an antiquated system and the only argument I can see is “that’s the way it’s always been”. It was introduced way before the internet and doesn’t seem to have adjusted for the sheer quantity of people creating content. And if it wasn’t obvious by now we don’t charge licensing or usage for our video or photography content. If you’ve hired us you can use the content as you please. Times are changing. Let’s discuss.

Although 60% is a great achievement, it's a shame Channel 4 wasn't able to meet it's target to get 100% of ads subtitled during their #paralympics coverage. 💬 C4's Head of Sales Victoria Appleby (nee Sangster) 'urged advertisers to “fully embrace accessibility” and said there was a “misconception” about how much it costs to subtitle.
