Two actively growing lava domes at Shiveluch! Both Sentinel-1 (SAR) and Sentinel-2 (Short wave infrared composite, known as SWIR) from recent days confirm the new Karan-1 lava dome to be growing on the southwestern flank of the volcano. Embracing Electric: A Bold Leap Forward. I am excited to share some incredible progress at Wilderness Scotland in our journey towards a more sustainable future. Our transition from diesel to electric vehicles (EV's) is well underway, and we now have 30% of our fleet running on electric power. While it may seem modest at first glance, this marks a significant milestone for our business and a huge step forward in our commitment to greener travel. Thanks to the enthusiasm and dedication of our team, we’ve planned a remarkable 649 days of EV use this year. These are days that would have otherwise been powered by diesel. Here’s what we’ve already achieved: 11 Agent Custom Trips 12 Agent Departures Trips, covering breathtaking locations like Skye, Loch Lomond, Glencoe, and Fort William. 9 Tailor-Made Departures, ensuring unique experiences in the stunning landscapes of Scotland. 7 Scheduled Departures, including our signature tours: Orkney, Argyll and the Isles, Arran Scotland in Miniature, High Points of the Cairngorms, and Cairngorms and Royal Deeside. 5 Private Departures such as SG+ Road Cycling, trips to the Outer Hebrides, and Skye. In addition to these trips with clients, our EVs have been instrumental in numerous office visits, reconnaissance missions, and not-for-profit trips. I recently made the "commute" from WSHQ to WEHQ a journey of nearly 250 miles and managed it on one charge and a great little coffee stop. We’re aware that challenges remain—designing itineraries, managing charging in remote locations, and occasionally dealing with infrastructure hiccups—but the overwhelming support and commitment from our team is truly inspiring and it is all part of the educational process for office, guides and our clients. The efforts in promoting sustainable travel and reducing our environmental impact are making a real difference. We’re thrilled to see our team wholeheartedly embracing electric and leading the charge towards a greener future. We have also successfully installed additional charging facilities at HQ to allow for onsite charging between departures and are currently working with our suppliers to understand how they can support us with our ambitious plans. Wisdom, youth, and maybe a bit of tech... The formula for future proof success in the Yachting industry Yachting depends on honouring it's past, and in an industry often accused of “clinging to the old ways,” it’s easy to see experience as outdated or out of touch. But lets reframe that perspective. The expertise, networks, and knowledge that industry veterans bring to the table are irreplaceable foundations. Their legacy isn’t a hurdle, it’s a head start for us as the next generation who follow. "Surrounding yourself with experience is not a threat; it’s a blessing". I'm seeing this phrase alot on LinkedIn lately Sat in the boardroom with Darren Hunt of 7Ps Yacht Management & Jamie Brown of E-Touch Systems, and many others I have been fortunate discuss projects with, listening, learning and adapting to their ways of operation, it's clear to me the way the industry should move forward. It's clear, to succeed in this industry you need honesty, transparency, ready to adapt, and not be a Jack of all trades (excuse the pun!). Focus and dedicate yourself to one clear role and service, aim to achieve and be great at it, but also understand that the value of experience, knowledge and wisdom is priceless. ULTIMAR is a bread and butter business, with a clear, no conflict, high standard Owner Representation for yacht projects. I would not feel comfortable in my position without the knowledge & guidance received throughout a 20 year career at sea in the merchant navy, north sea and yachting. These leaders have spent decades perfecting the art of successful project management and businesses within the industry, without tech and automated services, just pure human interaction, and their insights can guide us as the next generation in ways that pure innovation alone might overlook. The yachting industry doesn’t need to “kill the dinosaurs”, as we are constantly hearing, we need to learn from them. By integrating their tried and true methods with new approaches, we create a balanced future. A future that respects the past whilst pushing boundaries and moving forward. Are we valuing experience enough? Or are we in too much of a hurry to rewrite the rules? Let's remember that true progress is often built on the shoulders of giants.
