I've discussed a lot on the #StreamTimeSports Pod and at events the significant shift in Amazon's approach, evolving from being primarily a buyer of premium sports media rights to becoming more of a distribution platform and partner. The recent NBA deal in the US is an exception rather than the norm, similar to their Champions League agreement and a few other European deals. Overall, Amazon, like many big tech companies, is positioning itself as a hub for entertainment rather than a straightforward content buyer. While this strategy might seem like a no-brainer and the announcements may generate excitement in the industry, closing deals is just half the battle. Managing the customer journey for Prime subscribers to spend further on new premium services is complex. This is where another big tech players offering in YouTube’s Primetime channels stands out, as its seamless sign-up process works across all platforms, not just within YouTube itself. Many see the move toward big tech becoming aggregators as the change that had to happen, potentially easing the fragmentation that's plagued the industry. However, the ability of these platforms to drive significant supplementary subscriptions remains largely unproven. Biggest media story of the year: the explosion in women’s sports. The combination of big stars emerging in soccer and basketball with the need for live content for streaming services should drive huge growth. Not to mention the desire for people to go live events and the affordability of taking a family to a game. A lot of strong secular trends should set up the NWSL and WNBA for really good runs.
