Premium price point games on mobile. Robert Fahey does a great job of breaking down the woes of paid games on mobile and why RE7 fell flat on its face. It's not just because mobile gamers balk at price points and are trained to prefer and download free-to-play games (but one can't deny how big this factor is). Alongside his thorough analysis and reasonings, I'd like to add the elusive task that developers and platforms have of wooing the tastemakers and first adopters in games. With more mature platforms in PC and console, they've simply had more time (years more) to hone in on who this important demographic slice is, how to "talk" to them and develop some pretty sophisticated programs and strategies. When I was at PlayStation, they were masters of this (and still are). On mobile, this is still not fully understood, and is a different beast when you're dealing with billions of people in your ecosystem, as opposed to hundreds of millions. Why do tastemakers and first adopters matter in the bigger picture? Because these are the folx that are spreading awareness and convincing their friends to play the next cool game, or better yet, play the new hotness of multiplayer games, WITH them. Good old word of mouth still reigns. Even in the world of PC and console, this can still be tricky. No one REALLY knows what that perfect critical mass is of winning over this coveted gaming group that will spark the brush fire of adoption and break out hit. There are so many variables at play and when it all comes down to it- despite how sophisticated we think are with our fancy metrics- we will most likely never be able to fully capture- and measure- word of mouth. And for the record, I love premium games and still think there's a place for them on mobile, despite the challenges.

The Sumo Group closures really have broken me a bit, and I need to rant about the state of things. I'm sorry if it seems I'm glossing over all the closures before this one, but so many ex-students went there, so many ex-colleagues passed through there, and so my timeline is just filled with people looking for work. We keep talking and talking about the economic factors involved, Brexit and Covid and this and that ... the thing I can't stop thinking of is that in my life I've watched the world slowly pitch into a place of despondent capitalism. Art has become more about making stars and fame than helping people escape and reflect. A drive for "truth" and objectivity has resulted, paradoxically, in people putting more stock in spreadsheets and numbers than people. I can't help but feel that if you're bleating about finance and trade deals and business decisions, you're ignoring the fact that general support for artistic and creative endeavours has declined sharply and is still declining, even in the so-called "art world". Games are ultimately always going to be the first to fall in a culture war against creativity, because games are ultimately and profoundly pointless things. That's the whole majesty of the medium: they make us feel profound feelings, they help us explore our existence by being separate from reality, but to do so they MUST bring us nothing tangible in return. The truth is that our industry will probably bounce back to some degree, but it's not any financial structures or cost systems that will save game development as a medium and an art form - it's a cultural shift to recognise the importance of expressive and explorative subjective art in the world today, and the need to support creative endeavours without the pressure of financial recompense.

No squatch sightings last weekend...but wow...what a week since. A massively productive one for The Glitch (on all fronts), and apparently some other things happened around the industry as well...huh. Alright...let's-a-go: OMY@C 🤘 ⛏ - Metallica will be in Fortnite soon. The event is called "Metallica: Fuel Fire Fury," and it will kick off on June 22nd. The San Francisco band got on the Fortnite Festival stage yesterday - so if you're curious...hop on in there. RIP Cliff. RIP Eddie. 🍎 - Apple's WWDC was this week...and their formal entry into Ai was the big takeaway. "Apple Intelligence," was the name they landed on. Essentially, it's Ai integrated through every aspect of their various OS's...adding personal context to everything. My first reaction was...do I want that though? On one hand, this feels like the first real indication of where consumer Ai is headed...on the other: privacy? A big part of Apple's presentation of their Ai is "setting a brand-new standard for privacy in Ai." So...they're well aware of the line that's being crossed. Apple's 5-minute video overview (on their site) shows you how "Ai for the rest of us" will work...and it's easy to be cynical about it. A squirrel DJ...cool. Custom emoji's...neat. Still...you should watch it. When app devs finally start building for this though...look out. PREDICTION: iPhone 16 will be the best selling iPhone yet. The 6 sold 222M units total...71.5MM units in it's first 3 months...so we'll know by year's end how this crazy statement is trending. 📺 🎮 - Mike Verdu will soon be leaving his role as VP of Netflix Games (and starting a new role with the company). Speculation is rampant about what this means for the games unit. It's possible that it means...nothing at all. I'm still massively bullish on the gaming opportunity for Netflix. My personal opinion is that transmedia is the biggest, most exciting play here...but I've also heard there are internal headwinds on that. 🤷‍♂️ 🍷 ⛵ - I'm not going to Cannes...again. Maybe some day. I'll drink rosé and look important at home...again. I'm not bitter. 📺 🎮 - Follow Friday: Two nerds with a webcam...that you absolutely should be following if you're in the games business: 1) Chris Melissinos (Principal Evangelist for Amazon Web Services (AWS) - Video interviews with games industry legends, deep retro dives, and discussions on the top news. 2) Alexander Seropian (Founder/CEO of Look North World) - Host of "The Fourth Curtain," is always a headliner event. 📺 - Palm Royale (Apple+). Kristen Wiig as a social climber in 1960's south Florida. So good. Save a grasshopper for me. 🎵 - Spotify's "Daylist" - pull the throttle back a bit with your list names though. "90's Indie Twee Friday Afternoon," might be accurate...but it's embarrassing. 🎮 - It's been 2 weeks since I picked up Hogwarts Legacy and Vampire Survivors...haven't started either yet. THAT's how busy it's been.

Horrible news today with Rocksteady Studios Ltd being hit with a round of layoffs. According to Eurogamer, a number of employees have been laid off over the past month, with its QA department more than halved (from 33 staff to 15). Additionally, non-QA job were also affected. What is even more horrible is that the report also cites one employee who mentioned on social media that they had been informed they were being made redundant despite being in the middle of paternity leave. 😞 According to the source, the job losses are directly linked to the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, with its poor sales specifically mentioned as a reason for what it describes as “restructuring”. New Equity Recommended Minimum Rates for AAA Video Games. What You Need to Know: Incase you missed it... Equity, the actor’s union in the UK, has just released their updated recommended rates for AAA video games. These rates aim to ensure fair compensation for performers. Below, I’ve included the updated rate table for reference. Here's my initial thoughts: → The new usage fee increase is considerably high. Perhaps too much of an increase. → There’s no mention of accommodation for "grandfathered" projects. The sharp increase in usage fees could come as shock to many game developers and publishers. Can we expect the industry to suddenly absorb such a substantial rise - especially in a down market? What about projects that already have budgets in place. We have several projects with budgets agreed upon long before these rates were announced. What kind of ripple effect will this have on already contracted work? On the other hand it's positive to see Equity finally putting some emphasis on the video games market and establishing a proper pay structure for actors. Day 2 of Westminster Games Week and it's all about Skills. At last night's dinner with MPs I set out our ambition for this to be the "most pro-games Parliament in British history" based on three core "asks"for cross-bench support: 1) Supporting pro-growth policies, in particular by enhancing tax reliefs for game development and equipping the UK Games Fund with the resources to support a new generation of indies; 2) Working in partnership with the industry to maintain a balanced regulatory environment for video games developers and publisher's to create great experiences for players, and; 3) Supporting calls to put digital creativity at the heart of skills and education policy by backing the call for a Digital Creativity GCSE. This latter point is today's main topic for discussion in Parliament. We have built a digital society for our children, and now we urgently need to equip them with the core skills to live in it safely and productively. This touches on building empathy and critical literacy, media literacy and the curiosity and know-how to be digitally creative. We've already had support from teachers and policymakers. Our ambition is to translate this positive momentum into real and lasting change. We are working hard to supercharge not only the creative economy in the UK but to transform education and cultural participation. Forgive me, I want to repost this Games London update to do a classic LinkedIn 'reflect and tease' post. But hear me out. For just over eight years our Accelerator and other programmes (like the Pitch Training Bootcamp of old and now Game Changer) have supported new games businesses with workshops, mentoring and more. Today we pass another milestone as we kickstart the second Game Changer cohort with their first workshop, hosted at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly - fittingly the location for our first bootcamp back in 2017! - we've supported over 150 games studios with these programmes, giving them fast-track insight and connections. Well done again to the 2024 Accelerator cohort and thanks to our speakers, mentors and partners. Giving promising new businesses access and learning is so crucial to ensure emerging games studios can be sustainable and successful. Good luck to the Game Changer cohort who start their journey today (we'll be officially unveiling the cohort next week) - you're another ambitious and promising cohort. That said... there's now a bit of an oversupply in these programmes, we've got to admit. After we debuted the Accelerator in 2020, there's now similar programmes up and down the country. Brilliant! But there's nothing in the market to help studio start-ups convert to their first successful release, right? Publishers and investors faced with industry turmoil (or at least the perception of it!) are increasingly demanding that prospective developer partners have released at least one game on their own stead before starting a conversation. So now we're cooking something up to help businesses go from 'accelerator graduate' to successful debut launch. More news in Sept. Watch this space.

13 years ago I had a failing music studio, debt, high stress levels. 12 years ago I started Bigmouth Audio, focussed on B2B, offered multiple audio services (to see what would stick). 10 years ago I landed my first sound design project, started to laser focus on sound design for animation, started attending industry events relevant to my niche, started going to the gym. 9 years ago we landed our first BIG project, this changed my mindset, asked this client how we could better support them in achieving their goals going forward, started to focus more on voice casting & production. 8 years ago I found out I was going to be a dad, stopped working IN the business, focussed my time working ON the business, read Profit First to tackle more of the debt. 6 years ago pivoted the business to service games as well as animation, moved into a bigger studio, landed our first MAJOR project, this changed my mindset again. 5 years ago I hired project management staff, signed Netflix as a client, signed our first games client. 4 years ago we invested in building a state of the art audio facility in Glasgow, took over the rest of our building for office space, launched our business in Toronto, started doing sauna therapy. 3 years ago saw the end of the busiest spell we have ever had, entered one of the most challenging spells our industry has seen, blew through our cash reserves. only recently we have started to land decent projects again, saw a slight improvement in the market, started to focus on building our / my brand, decided to invest in the basics (finance & strategy). Now I have: - Experience & battle scars - A great team - Great clients - Resilience and better mental health - No debt - A profitable business All things I didn't have 12 years ago. Turning things around takes time. Often a lot of time! It's also never going to be a smooth ride. But it's guaranteed to be one hell of a journey.

Why is it important to understand games? Because they explain how a party turns 35% of the vote in an election into over 400 seats in Parliament. Labour’s win in the UK general election is many things. A sign that voters could not do anything other than boot out a tired and incompetent Conservative Party; a relatively unenthusiastic trade off of steady competence over wider vision; a least worst option that has opened the doors to smaller parties. It’s also a victory for ruthless campaigning. It’s an operational masterclass in which financial and personal resource was directed with strategic precision to get as many Labour MPs over the top as possible. And it is derived from a fundamental truth: elections are games with clear rules. Labour’s strategy - and, to be fair, The Liberal Democrat’s approach - rejected the idealism of “the best vision wins out” to say “how do we win this game within the set rules” to avoid another 2019 style disappointment. It’s an approach that is central to great campaigning. It is also, as Kelly Clancy posits indirectly in her great book Playing With Reality, a perfect example of minmaxing a game: controlling and risking as little as possible from your side while maximising opportunities within the rules (and errors from your opponents). Clancy argues that our failure to understand play and to take it seriously within society means we can’t understand fully the social, cultural and biological drivers that lead us to create the rules based systems that we play within. Elections are therefore one of those rare times where the dynamic of play is surfaced in a way that we can truly see, that we can understand explicitly and that we can talk about easily - demonstrating its immense value in a way little else can. Back in Westminster today for the launch of Westminster Games Week! We have had a fantastic reception from new and established MPs and Peers keen to talk about the UK's world-leading video game and interactive entertainment industry. Over the next three days Ukie has organised a series of round-tables, Parliamentary events, networking receptions and private conversations aimed at securing the long-term interests of our industry. The "mood music" around our industry is encouraging - the new Government have consistently referred to us as a key industry in their growth agenda and we have had really good conversations with officials and Parliamentarians. Now we need to translate positive sentiment into concrete support. We all looked with envy at the Independent Films Tax Relief announced recently (although based as it was on a market failure argument I'm not sure it's the exact path we want to follow!). We need to ensure that we're building a supportive financial environment for people to scale and grow their games business. Video games and interactive entertainment are a massive success story, but sustaining and growing that success on a sustainable basis needs Government to work hand-in-hand with industry to ensure that the right support mechanisms are in place. It promises to be an exciting week!

Sad News in the Gaming Industry: Microsoft Lays Off 650 Employees from Xbox Division 😞 Microsoft has announced a significant layoff of 650 employees from its Xbox division, marking the third round of cuts in 2024. This comes as the gaming industry faces economic challenges after the pandemic boom. Phil Spencer reassured that no games or studios will be shut down, but the cuts will primarily affect corporate and support teams. It's a tough reminder that even in a growing industry like gaming, financial pressures lead to difficult decisions. Video Games Industry Memo landed in 3,500 inboxes this morning with an exclusive first look at Into Games's Difficulty Level report, exploring the UK video games industry's problematic relationship with social class. 34.7% of the UK population is working class, yet the proportion of people with such a background in games is 13%. This isn't just lower than similar creative industries like Film and TV (29%) music (22%); it's also a smaller share than the civil service (18%) and professional services such as law and accountancy (17% at each). And while there are wider social and institutional factors behind the problems that games face, the blunt truth is that the industry has known about its issues with social class for nearly half a decade and has done little about it. Fortunately, there is plenty industry can do to improve its lot including founding a relevant campaigning/advocacy group, creating guidance for businesses on how to support developing talent from lower socioeconomic groups and creating a cluster based strategy anchored around locations such as Birmingham and Middlesbrough to address challenges intersectionally. But there does need to be a push for action from industry. Otherwise, the UK games sector will struggle to argue that warm words committing to supporting diversity and inclusion are matched by its actions. Definitely agree with Richard here--it echoes a sentiment by a mentor, who taught me that to be a good game developer, you need to learn how to have fun. Let's expand upon it. These are things that can weigh down a lot of folks in our industry, and plenty of other creators on this platform reiterate statistics I need not echo. To navigate the "depressing stuff," know that it is okay to take a breather. Practice self-care, please--job hunting is intense but blocking out twenty minutes for a walk or to watch a show can really change things for the better. A scenario many colleagues often find themselves in is following (the well-meaning) advise of networking and applying. It's something I found myself guilty of as well--and it wasn't until I noticed that my calendar had little to no time left for... well, fun. It was a period of time I also participated in game jams, and looking back on the projects I could tell that had I consumed more media (be it games, shows, movies) my work would have improved by a lot. Find the hope and positivity in creative endeavors--I may be biased, but every day I look forward to creating stories and experiences. It isn't always about work. Looking forward to the next meal, the next walk, the next hike, next networking event, next portfolio update--these are "little big" things that when compounded on have helped me navigate this industry. Hopefully, this little positivity train that Richard started can also help others. I'll end this by showcasing an example of what I meant by how consuming media can nurture the "narrative design" brain: this weekend, I finished watching Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury by Studio Sunrise through Crunchyroll. It was a lot of fun, and I highly recommend watching it--as the series progressed, it definitely inspired some ideas on combat systems, cinematic scripts and interactions that I would love to explore someday.
