Without better awareness and engagement we will struggle to attract the #geosciencetalent and #changeagents of the future who will : - Deliver on the #energytransition - Source #criticalminerals such as #lithium #copper #nickel #cobalt and rare others earth elements - Provide #groundengineering and #environmental assessments to support #construction, #transport and #infrastructure projects - Manage #naturalhazards and #wastestorage Therefore I am excited to be involved in this new #StrategicGeoscienceAlliance #GSA as representative of the #SubsurfaceTaskForce Skills group. I am curious to hear new perspectives from outside of my area of expertise in #energy to see how we can help drive change together.

It's been a long journey for PetroStrat, looking at the Cretaceous in Mid-Norway, since our first #stratigraphy study in 2005/6 and proprietary work for many clients over the last 18 years. Now, with the completion of this more integrated and in-depth analysis of this set of reservoirs, that journey extends to a more holistic understanding of the play and potential in this challenging section. #Norway #reservoirgeology

Over the last few months I have added posts to this series - fossil morphology for sedimentologists, outlining the main morphological elements of major macrofossil invertebrate groups - eight groups so far. This kind of information is useful for initial field IDs (but not specific taxonomies). I’m going to admit moving back to a technical role in a new discipline area for (CCS) has been tough. It’s a lot to learn.  What better than 4 days, nearly 2 km of coreand dedicated experts from Equinor visiting the type sections and fields on the NCS to blow off the dust!  This is a great run through the Palaeozoic to Present day stratigraphy of the Norwegian North Sea. It demonstrates how critical understanding from legacy oil and gas has role in the energy transition and the broader understanding of the nuances of potential storage complexes.  #learning #geology #core #ccs #geoscience

If our next UK government stops any new licences and new exploration, together with the availability of miscible CO2 solvent, it is now time to assess and identify improved oil recovery (IOR)/enhanced oil recovery (EOR) activity or technology with potential to maximise economic recovery of UK’s existing licences.

Perhaps that will include dynamic petrophysics - changing the near wellbore environment and making repeat measurements that observe phase changes and solubility effects. Continuous real-time high-resolution surveillance and analysis must be the future. To do that we need new measurements and techniques. Break the paradigm. Think out of the box! The Aliso Canyon nat gas storage project leaked, resulting in a $1.8 billion charge to SoCal Gas. THIS IS DISGUSTING. Read that last paragraph in this comment by Bill Gately.   So, a US citizen who obviously knows very little about the UK, not only feels entitled to tell me about my own country, but insinuates that its government, which has been in office for barely a month, is somehow responsible for the terrible murders that took place in Southport last week. The combination of ignorance and arrogance is breathtaking and THE EXPLOITATION OF HUMAN MISERY TO MAKE A POLITICAL POINT IS REPELLENT The background, for anyone who is interested. Elon Musk made two recent comments about the recent riots in the UK. In the first he stated that in the UK “Civil war is inevitable”, in the second he labelled the country’s newly-elected Prime Minister as ‘Two-tier Starmer”, perpetuating the myth that the rioters were somehow being treated with disproportionate severity. Arrogance and ignorance yet again, in this case combined with exploitation of a position as owner of a still influential platform. Gately, however, leapt to his defence, claiming that it is just ideologues who blame disinformation. I wrote what I thought was a quite mild comment, but one in which I strongly objected to Musk using his platform to spread lies relating to happenings in a country about which he clearly knows very little. Dear colleagues and friends with an interest in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and risks to containment of CO2. We are undertaking a new research project with Crown Estate Scotland to try and understand the risk posed by legacy wells to CCS. Benjamin Pullen, our highly motivated and capable PhD Student, is conducting a short survey to gauge what the wider CCS community believes are the most important aspects associated with a legacy well that might make it more or less risky to CCS containment. This is a kind request for anyone with knowledge and/or interest in well integrity, wellbore leakage and CCS to please follow Bens link below and answer a few simple questions (should only take 5 - 10 minutes maximum). This will massively help us in our research activities and will be hugely appreciated. We will also look to provide a summary of the survey findings via Linkedin once complete. Please feel free to share this post/the link to the survey to any relevant colleagues. The more input we can get on this survey the better we can understand about what colleagues think makes a more or less risky legacy well. The aim is for the survey and our wider research project to aid deployment of CCS in the UK and beyond.

How fantastic to see companies like OPC championing the external work their staff do in engaging with communities, young people, and future geoscientists. Not only does it boost the company's image, but also the morale and fulfilment of staff, which in turn leads to a happier, more productive workforce. More of this please!

As reported by this recent research, there are 3-4 times fewer geophysics graduates than needed in the UK. The situation is similar in many other regions around the world. New research from John Rasmus and colleagues highlights fundamental issues with popular formation evaluation models (Waxman-Smits and Dual-Water). The Waxman-Smits model isn't a true parallel conductivity model. While the Dual-Water model is an improvement, it has its own limitations. The authors uncover fundamental flaws in these models and propose remedies to enhance their accuracy, especially in low-salinity environments.
