NHS Supply Chain Launches Policy on Data Standards for Supplier Product Coding 📱 Improving data on medical devices across the NHS system is a key contributor to improving patient safety through greater and more rapid traceability. Our vision is that a single scan from inventory management systems can be integrated to have many uses across the NHS, tackling financial and workforce challenges and most importantly improving patient safety. To accelerate traceability of medical devices, we’ve launched a policy on Data Standards for Supplier Product Coding. All of our medical devices and clinical consumables suppliers are to adopt globally recognised coding standards for product identification, preferably GS1. The adoption of global standards enhances the traceability of medical devices and other products used in an episode of patient care. In line with our vision to make it easier for the NHS to put patients first, adopting global data standards will help to reduce the clinical time required for product or patient recall. To mark the launch of NHS England's second national EPR usability survey, we thought we’d share a few of our own thoughts on why the question of usability matters so much in electronic patient record (EPR) development. 1️⃣ Our CEO Thomas Webb wrote about the key findings from the last usability survey, conducted in 2021/22. Aligning Healthtech Products with NHS Needs - An Age Old Question Healthtech companies have a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the NHS, but alignment is key. Understanding the specific needs and challenges faced by the NHS is the first, and perhaps most difficult step. This means actively engaging with NHS staff and government decision-makers to gain insights into their daily operations, pain points and objectives. Regular consultations and feedback loops can ensure that the products developed are not only innovative but also practical and user-friendly which is key. Another crucial aspect is interoperability. The NHS uses a variety of systems and platforms (often pretty old), and any new technology must seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure. This reduces the learning curve for healthcare professionals and ensures that patient care is not disrupted. Some areas such as data security and compliance with UK regulations is non-negotiable, so Healthtech companies must prioritise patient confidentiality and data protection to maintain trust and meet legal requirements. Healthtech firms should consider scalability and long-term support. The NHS is a vast organisation (ranked in the top 10 employers globally) with diverse needs across different regions. Solutions that can be easily scaled and supported over time will be more attractive. Integrated care systems are showing big variations in their ability to make #effective use of #patient #data, according to a new report - Understanding Patient Data, in collaboration with its hosts at the NHS Confederation and its ICS Network, has published a new report on the use of data within #ICSs. It found that while some ICSs, or parts of them, have large analytical datasets containing information from a range of sources – including primary, acute, community and mental health NHS providers and local authority social care – other datasets are significantly less advanced.
