📣 We are excited to share the products being put to the test by people with lung conditions as part of Asthma + Lung UK's first Innovation Accelerator 📣 ✨ First up is BreathTec, an online programme that supports people to manage breathlessness and encourages physical activity through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) approaches. 💬 Our co-design team was impressed by BreathTec’s ‘holistic approach to dealing with breathlessness’, with one co-designer commenting: ‘As someone with asthma and trauma history, I’m really impressed with how they are linking mental health, anxiety and breathlessness and approaching them as one, to be tackled together.’ ✨ Secondly, we’re testing Breathment, an app that supports people through a tailored programme of exercises assigned by a physiotherapist and supported by AI analysis to monitor and improve their technique. 💬 Our co-design team was excited by Breathment’s potential to support people with lung conditions to move more through its ‘combination of a physiotherapist’s help with independent usage of the app’, with one co-designer living with a lung condition commenting: ‘I really like that you get suggested tailor-made exercises based on your situation.’ 🚀 We have now kicked off the testing phase, with 36 diverse people with lung conditions from across the UK testing the products over 8 weeks. 👀 If you’re interested in finding out more, check out the full blog post! 👇 ✍️ We’ve also written about the journey of working as a co-design team to whittle down the innovations that applied to the final two - links in the comments! #CoDesign #LungHealth #HealthTech #InnovationAccelerator

But the destination offers substantial rewards. Firstly, embracing 3D design requires a significant mindset shift. Implementation goes far beyond gaining technical ability using new software; it’s about rethinking and re-establishing the entire design and production process. Teams used to physical sampling will now need to visualise and iterate digitally, which can be as challenging as the technical learning curve. ✅ Balancing this learning phase with maintaining operational efficiency is another hurdle. It’s crucial that you set realistic milestones and expectations to ensure your team can handle the transition without compromising the daily responsibilities of the business. ✅ Aligning new technologies with business objectives is essential. Ensure each step in adopting 3D design contributes to broader goals, like reducing costs, increasing market responsiveness, or driving sustainability. 💡 The long-term benefits are too compelling for you to be put off from 3D transition by inevitable learning curves. Unspun—founded in 2015 by Stanford alums Beth Esponnette, Walden Lam, and Kevin Martin—wants to transform the system. It has developed technology that allows brands to set up machines in existing factories that will weave yarns into garments within minutes. The founders’ broader vision is to encourage companies to invest in domestic manufacturing, so they can make products closer to their customer. This will allow them to be more agile, deciding what styles to make just weeks, or months, in advance. Any guesses on exactly how this was achieved using AI? In industrial design, working with form often involves transitioning between shapes. I cannot humanly achieve such a rapid variety. We should leave this to the machine while we judge the options—and then riff on even better options ourselves. Sharper Image® Burnout Drifter RC Car. Our design user research revealed how users love to try and skid and drift our Remote-Control Vehicles. This can be challenging depending on the surface the vehicle is travelling, the speed, the tires and the skill of the driver. We therefore set about developing a RC vehicle that made drifting and skidding achievable by anyone anywhere. The solution was to introduce rear wheel steering which swings the rear of the vehicle out on turns. For additional theatre the team utilized the ultrasonic component from our humidifies to create a water-based vapor which appears as a cloud from the wheel arches and back of the vehicle to simulate a smoky burnout. The effect is further amplified through lighting. The water is supplied through an onboard tank which can be refilled using water from the faucet. Exciting news! Rootfull has been awarded the Creative Catalyst 2024 grant from Innovate UK! 🌱 This award represents a major milestone for Rootfull and will enable access to unique expertise and facilities to achieve scale and impact. By creating beeswax casts from 3D printed templates, root combines digital precision with natural growth to "program" living materials. This innovative process pushes past the limits of 3D printing alone, pointing towards a new era of programmable, sustainable design. Root textile merges biology and design, enabling the creative industries to transition to circular, eco-friendly materials. It’s a disruptive innovation with far-reaching implications for craft and design in the UK and beyond. As an underwater photographer, I have had the privilege of collaborating with some of the most talented fashion stylists, creative directors, designers, and thinkers. My deep involvement in the creative industries has led to the development of root-textile. It's the result of a blend of craftsmanship, design, sustainability, sculpture, product design, biology, chemistry, and storytelling - bringing together disciplines that are usually kept separate. I am thrilled and grateful to Innovate UK for this funding. An in-depth, behind the scenes story of a product Jordan Westerberg and I (Berg Design Co) designed. Thread on X by the Owner of PEEL, Marshall Haas. Please read the thread as it goes into much more detail on the process of creating The Touch Tool. It is interesting to see what all needs to happen to launch a product in one week. The Touch Tool is a brass keychain hook that allowed consumers to pull open doors, press buttons at the gas station, etc. without touching those things directly. This would help people reduce their exposure to germs. We designed The Touch Tool to be a lifetime product: an artifact to reflect on of what the world was like in 2020 and, most importantly, a useful tool. Machined from 100% solid brass blocks. The antimicrobial brass alloy assists the consumer's need for the product's intended purpose. To help people block and stop the spread of germs. This product was a highly needed tool for the time, it filled a gap that genuinely did not exist before. As the first of its kind, it created an entirely new market following the launch in April of 2020. The Touch Tool was featured in The New York Times, GQ, Yahoo!, Forbes, Glamour, and many more.
