Jaguar Land Rover UK launched a new ad and it doesn’t have a car in it...Are they crazy? Their ad and rebrand is defo a bold move. But, what do you think about when you think of Jaguar? A blue sports car, beige seats and wood varnish interior? Someone’s grandad whizzing through country lanes, with the roof down? Is he smoking a pipe and wearing driving gloves? Just me? 😂 Jaguar is an iconic British brand. But one that clearly has an older audience. They need to appeal to a younger audience to carve out a new space for themselves. This is clearly a brave move, but I think that anything that they did here would need to be drastic. I think it's bold, but it's necessarily. I don’t think it’s compete. I think what we've seen so far is the opening scenes of a movie. And we're about to go on a journey - taking a new generation through their rich history and what the brand stands for. The Value in Measurement report from JICMAIL and DMA (Data & Marketing Association) UK is available and is an informative and interesting read for anyone looking to understand effective cross channel measurement for marketing campaigns. Staggeringly 65% of respondents still report a misalignment on measurement and reporting across channels. That's a crazy figure but does highlight challenges of measuring each marketing channel fairly. The report provides recommendations on how to create an aligned view for looking at performance. I have watched with interest alllllll the energy people have put into their system 1 opinions about Jaguar last week. Can’t deny I probably had them too but decided to let my system 2 step in before commenting. Firstly, bravo Jaguar. Whether intended or not you have created an incredible amount of coverage, from MailOnline report to your brand director (less said about the MoL the better though) and tonight’s BBC News covering the response I guess you didn’t expect to have to put out. But more seriously; BRAVO indeed. In the industry we often talk about brands not being brave enough but this week you have been super brave which I have no doubt was born from new strategies including the direction of only producing EVs which invariably comes with new audiences who will expect and want different things from brands they chose to buy from. I am a firm believer that a brand must ever evolve to stay relevant or attract new audiences. evolution or revolution? Well that will come down to the business strategy but change is a must. Jaguar has never been a brand for me personally, it felt old, unattainable & undesirable and I suspect I may not be their new target audience either but I am now more likely to consider them. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect different results. And I think it’s safe to say whatever your opinion is of Jaguar’s re-brand…. Insanity can’t be it. Rory Sutherland has had his say on the Jaguar and said the rebrand was NEEDED to compete in the electric car space. Do you agree? 🤔 Rory argues that digitalisation has massively affected the luxury electric car market, allowing low-cost electric car brands to compete in this space like never before. With everyone getting crazy about JLR company rebrand, we couldn't help but look at what jaguar tracking looked like. And, honestly, even if the container could take advantage of a little diet, it's ok! 41 GA4 events doesn't look so terrible when compared with other actors in the automotive industry, Server-Side is setup, CMP is green. Missing consent mode. Lots of GTM containers calls, which should be reviewed because if compartmentalization of tracking across containers (one for analytics, one for media, one per country, ...) is fine on papers, it's still negatively impacting the weight of the container and thus the page load performance. What do you make of the new Jaguar ad and rebrand? It all seems rather clickbaity, designed to generate outrage. (Elon hates it, but then again, he's also creating free publicity for a competitor). Had an insightful conversation with a well established buyer last Friday... She provided some valuable industry insights, highlighting a recent dip in automotive market sales that now appears to be stabilising. Discussing the future, we touched on the 2030 ban on sales of all new petrol and diesel vehicles. We both agreed that the UK still has a long way to go in transitioning over to EVs fully, considering the limited infrastructure compared to countries like the US. I for one am against the ban (may be controversial) but I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this and also your standpoint on where you feel the market is heading. #IndustryInsights #AutomotiveMarket #EVTransition

Our Market View identifies how the average price of a used car increased in April for the first time this year, following a succession of monthly dips. Prices averaged £16,964, a month-on-month rise of 1% (or £146), but down 9% year-on-year from £18,564. ⛔ 🌱 🚗 ANOTHER CAR AD BAN DUE TO A SUSTAINABILITY CLAIM This week, the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has banned a Meta ad for Mazda2 Hybrid. PROBLEMATIC CLAIM ❌ “Exciting, efficient and sustainable” Mazda UK said “sustainable” meant to communicate the efficiency of the Mazda2 Hybrid, compared to the non-hybrid Mazda2 model. The efficiency related to the battery-powered electric motor’s fuel consumption and (tailpipe) CO2 emissions. However - In its context, that was a broad sustainability claim. It implied that the hybrid Mazda2 was “sustainable” across its full life cycle. There is no evidence for this. - When powered by its petrol engine, the car releases greenhouse gases. Emissions are also generated in other aspects of the car’s life cycle – for example during manufacturing and charging the battery with electricity from the national grid. 🌐 Not to mention that sustainability goes well beyond CO2 emissions. For example, car manufacturing and maintenance require a lot of raw materials from all over the globe, such as steel, rubber, plastics and aluminium. Materials like cobalt, copper, lithium and rare earth metals are commonly used in electric and hybrid vehicles too. ❗❗ Remember also the Jevons Paradox (the efficiency paradox): - When a resource becomes cheaper due to greater efficiency, it becomes more attractive for consumers and industries. - The increased affordability leads to greater consumption. This can offset the initial efficiency gains. For true sustainability, we need SUFFICIENCY, rather than simply efficiency. #Marketing #Sustainability #Advertising #Automotive #Environment
