Lead and online sales tracking broke 😡😭 but we still increased both by over 300%......whilst spending less! Ages ago we took on a Google Ad account that wanted both leads and online sales! They felt like their current agency was leaving things to tick over, AND THEY WERE RIGHT! We made hiring an absolute nightmare for ourselves🤦 When we founded outbloom just over 2 years ago, we knew that we were always going to be a director-led consultancy. We wanted to offer clients a direct route to the most experienced performance marketing talent in the industry. This meant from day one we would be hiring at a senior level, something that’s pretty daunting as new business owners and challenges the typical agency growth model of hiring juniors first. Let’s face it, amazing and experienced talent is pricey, so it’s a substantial investment for a young business. We’ve had endless discussions about whether or not to hire less experienced team members and upskill them in the background, but it just doesn’t fit our model nor values for why we set up in the first place. This has made hiring very difficult. The candidates we are looking for are the often hidden away unsung heroes of performance marketing and very difficult to reach, or they are at the point in their career where they are setting up/going solo or settled in a senior position in-house/agency side. Even though we are up against it, we wouldn’t change a thing. 🌷 We have built, and are building, a network of consultants who have cut their teeth over many years in the industry with consistent track records and a desire to stay close to activation whilst being able to bring together and deliver award winning digital strategies. 🌷 The costs are higher for us and the hiring process longer, however, what we are able to offer clients has time and time again proved to be incredibly valuable, and cost effective. 🌷 We hire consultants who’ve been in the thick of it with activation for years and the bulk of resource is allocated to the bigger picture, whether this is attribution, tracking, network expansion, go-to-market strategies, reporting, and more. Nowadays, the time on in-platform BAU is declining, so we look for consultants who are well rounded and add value across channels to our partners. Whatever level of experience, finding the right people in this industry is not easy. Barriers to entry are low and finding that dream hire can take time, something that’s not always on our side being a fast paced start up. What we do have on our side is a vast network that myself and Mark built over the past 14 years which has and will be the backbone for our growth/hiring. P.S. We only hire people who wear black 😂

Small creators who love what they do know their product/offering. Small creators graft for a living. Small creators give us true, real, high value content. Big corporates give us fuck all. Google's HCU was like a massive fuck you to smaller creators. The funny thing is, the smaller creators were the ones who paid more attention to the things Google said to do - create better content. Since when was Forbes an authority for best shavers or kitchen appliances? Google is systematically alienating the very people who create good content - for shareholder profits. Google is the next Boeing. Boeing was once a company ran by the engineers who made a great product, now they make shambolic planes that drop out of the sky or lose doors. Google was once a company with a slogan "Do no evil" Now look at it. Overnight millions of creators lost significant income because their specialist content lost rank to big media publications. Just because we work ranking sites for Google doesn't mean we have to like Google. #seo #google

Next up in my series of “lessons and memories” as I celebrate Starling Social’s 10-year anniversary: learning when to drop a toxic client ☠️ When you’re first starting out as a freelancer or agency owner there’s a tendency to take on any client just for the sake of bringing in revenue… but it’s important to be choosy from the get-go. Case in point: one of Starling’s first “big” clients was a consulting firm out of New York. I got the business because I attended a seminar the owner was hosting here in Winnipeg, and by the end of our 1-1 meeting I’d closed the deal to write a series of monthly blog posts and manage their social media. I felt ✨so proud✨ and it felt like a HUGE win at the time. It was a lot of money for my growing agency, and having a client out of NYC felt like a big feather in our cap. But over the coming months our working relationship with this client quickly became unpleasant and resentful. The CEO of the company was rude, dismissive of our suggestions as industry experts, and would leave dismissive and downright mean comments when reviewing the content we created. But I held onto the business and didn’t say anything to the client because I wanted the business, the (supposed) prestige of a NYC client for my new agency, and the money I was able to pay my team through such a lucrative contract. Essentially, my team and I ate sh*t because I didn’t have the confidence to set the tone for the kind of working relationship we deserved. Of course, this didn’t last. The final straw came after a meeting with our client and some other companies he was working with. The client berated us all on the call for giving him feedback about his website and how the landing pages weren’t set up to convert leads effectively. “This isn’t my problem” he said “this is your f*cking job and you’re supposed to be the professionals, so make the campaign work!” After the meeting I had another call with the other companies and we all agreed that it was time to say “goodbye” to this person. I remember crying (and having a big glass of wine) as I wrote out my email terminating our contract. At the time, it was the hardest thing I’d done to date, but it relieved a HUGE mental load from myself and the team, and taught me a valuable lesson about the kinds of clients I want us to work with: If you can’t respect us, you can’t work with us. It's been running various trials across different territories and this week announced a roll-out (though not to the UK at present) with...and this is the interesting bit...a suite of new service packages, including ⭐Optimised search results (everyone wants to get seen) ⭐Access to Meta support (if you've tried to get hold of Meta you may pay just for this) ⭐Links from Reels (useful if you're getting good Reel traffic potentially) ⭐Security features for higher priced packages ⭐Account review from Meta (er, not sure I'd pay for this one) 💡Meta is trying to heave its business away from a reliance on advertising to become a service provider. A common thing about everyone I create a CV for, when they get a job, they can't send a text. Their excitement calls for a voice note, they actually want me to hear how happy they are. So in March I created this CV for someone who used to be a driver and she was looking for a job as a truck driver. She came back to me weeks later saying that she was hired and signed a contract. Just that the whole conversation was in our language, but I think the important keywords are there. This is the part of my job that makes me happy, knowing that someone came to me jobless and now they have a testimony. a permanent job of being a truck driver what she wanted from the first place. When I create a CV, I use your work experience and education,anything you have been involved in to create a nice Summary, at the top of your CV.
