How to sound more interesting: an easy #copywriting hack. Whenever I do #BrandVoice, #Messaging or #HouseStyle projects, I always include a cliché bin. It’s one of my favourite questions to ask a client as it always generates a good old rant. Every industry has them. And as what you don’t say is as important as what you do say, it’s time to formally sack off the clichés that make you sound like everyone else (or worse still, a robot). Clichés are flogged to death for a reason. It’s an easy way to say what you mean, but it’s also a bit lazy. The reader will most likely skip over them and they won’t resonate. The end result? A missed opportunity to connect. In the charity world, this could look like, ‘Together, we can…’. In the music industry it could be one more artist talking about their ‘self-penned’ music. In B2B, maybe it’s, ‘In a rapidly changing digital landscape…’. They creep in everywhere, and the more you look, the more you spot. Ditch the cliché and come up with a more interesting way to say it, and you’ll instantly sound more interesting and your personality will shine through. And it won’t sound like it was spewed out by ChatGPT either. If you’re stumped, just try saying it in real life, to a real person. Engage your cliché radar. Grab the thesaurus, consign the predictable to the bin, and show the world you do things differently. 💫

When we pointed out that there were several spelling mistakes on their home page but they flatly denied it and became arrogant. What does that say about the company to the outside world? We can help….. You need a web review. There are dozens of statistics about website conversions, but the key statistic is that you only have three seconds to tell your new prospective client, they have found the solution they are looking for. As part of our “Critical Friend” web review, we will look at your website from a marketing and sales point of view. We will look at the journey from landing page through to contact and offer suggestions where text, messaging, tone, images can be improved to make the transition from landing page through to sales contact as easy as possible. We don’t look at the function or technical aspects of the site, although we will identify broken links and non-functioning aspects, the last thing you want is a prospect finding your social media links or contact us button doesn’t work. You will get a report highlighting areas where we feel there are missed opportunities in terms of your marketing and suggestions on where more could be done to help potential clients find their way through to contact or sales. A magical evening exploring the healing power of poetry! ✨ Last night I attended The Poetry Pharmacy event in partnership with Mind, featuring powerful readings from Stephen Fry, Dame Harriet Walter, Gloria Obianyo, and Denise Gough. Led by William Sieghart, the event offered poetic prescriptions for life’s many challenges, providing hope and comfort to all present. The evening was filled with heartfelt reflections, nods of understanding, and the undeniable power of words. Before the readings began, the panellists were asked about their first introductions to poetry, which made me reflect on my own. Initially, I thought of school, where poetry felt forced and focused more on structure than meaning. But after listening to the panellists, I realised that poetry takes many forms, whether in nursery rhymes, the music we listen to, or even greeting cards from loved ones. It’s all poetry, just packaged differently. This brought me back to my experience earlier this year when I joined an NHS mental health programme focused on therapeutic writing. Over several months, we were given prompts, sometimes a single word, other times a choice of poems. This is where I truly learnt to understand poetry. It wasn’t about learning structure, it was about feeling the words and connecting them to my own perspective. Over time, my writing evolved. From rambles to poetry. Professionally, it's taught me the power of perspective, how to humanise stories and how to be clearer in how I present. I couldn’t be prouder to say that writing has now become both a hobby and a passion. My ability to concentrate has increased, my love of reading has returned and it's helped me process, express, reflect and move. #Poetry #MentalHealth #TherapeuticWriting

Are events right for your business? Events can be an amazingly powerful part of your PR strategy but can also be a pit of money that does not deliver adequate returns. I have run exhibitions and events for clients for a long time now and find it both exhilarating and very stressful! I always need to sit in a dark room afterwards but the returns we deliver for clients are always worth it. A couple of my top tips; - Think about who you collaborate with, work with people you trust, it’s SO important - Make sure you are at the right point in your business to deliver - know your offer and have your process and materials on point - Be prepared to give as well as take. Events should be collaborative, it’s not just about what you can get - Be present, don’t hit the wine until after you’ve done everything you need to do and represented yourself well (never ceases to amaze me the people high up in companies that are hammered before they’ve even worked their way around a room) - Do the after work! Reconnect, thank people, learn and implement lessons - Thank people AGAIN - As an organiser, do not underestimate the power of an Emma Wigan which means that you are never wondering if there are enough chairs, enough food or drink or people left unable to find the venue (she also flags down cars and drops pins for people 😂)
