🎤 Feeling Afraid but Doing It Anyway! 🌟 I recently had the incredible honor of being asked to write and present a seminar for a university on working in TV within Post Production. To say I was excited would be an understatement, but let’s be real—I was also terrified! 😬 For weeks, I squeezed in time between work and weekends to put together a presentation that I hoped would be both inspiring and authentic about what it’s really like to work in this dynamic industry. I genuinely wanted to share the highs, the lows, and everything in between. I’m thrilled to say the seminar was very well received! The students were engaged for the entire hour, and their personal thanks afterwards truly warmed my heart. 🥰 But here’s the kicker: I was shaking in my boots standing up there with my own work! Yet, I pushed through that fear, and the exhilaration of stepping out of my comfort zone was next to none. It reminded me that growth often happens when we're willing to embrace our fears. So, to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking that next step—whether it's presenting, pitching, or pursuing a new opportunity—remember that you're not alone. Fear is simply a sign that you’re pushing boundaries and growing. Let’s continue to inspire one another and embrace those moments that make us a little uncomfortable. 📻 Despite changing habits, radio listening continues to be remarkably robust in the UK (Video didn't kill the radio star in the 1970s either) 📺 While linear TV, and its income, is falling rapidly; radio listening is at record highs in the UK and engagement time is up year-on-year. Ofcom's latest Media Nations Report for this year has some great bits of information: 📈 "Live radio continues to be the most popular form of audio, with just under 50 million people aged 15+ (88.6%) tuning in for an average of 20.5 hours each week." Half the population are using music streaming services And a fifth are listening to podcasts. That rises to 30% for younger age brackets. And podcast advertising is up 23% in a year. For your radio or TV broadcast station, it happens to nearly every broadcast engineer eventually - this month's SBE local DC market meeting!! ....someone routes a phone call or forwards you an email from someone complaining that your signal is causing interference, either to their signal or someone else's, but they are looking into it. Sometimes its another broadcaster. Sometimes its a member of the general public who insists its your fault and demands you immediately cease operations. But regardless of how it became your problem, there are people out there who are willing to help. The same can be said when dealing with any government entity, including the FAA. Whether moving to a different tower, constructing a new site, modifying an existing structure, adding frequencies to an existing installation, or even just correcting a height or coordinates, its good to have a friend who knows what they are doing, and how to speak their language. How do you drag yourself out of development hell? Just over 3 years ago when I was starting out as a commissioner I needed to up my development game massively. I’d been a multi-genre programmer maker for the best part of 20 years so I already had the exec, shoot and edit skills covered, I was pretty much new to development though. I was presented with the following problem: Briefing production companies with the needs of four channels Dave, W, Yesterday and Gold each with very distinct brands and guard rails. Sounds relatively simple (you can read UKTV’s commissioning briefs on the site) but what I wanted to do was build progressive, collaborative, constructive and rewarding relationships with production companies where we successfully worked towards commissions. Rather than them hopefully firing out ideas and seeing what sticks. So I needed a blueprint, a model. At the time my mentor was the brilliant CEO of 72 films David Glover and we very quickly hit it off. He had plenty of time for me and we had a natural synergy when analysing TV. He broke it down like this, the content landscape is a big circus with lots of attractions vying for your attention, you have to offer the audience something to that is worth ‘stopping at your tent for.’ He pointed to ‘Dawn French’s Secret World of Chocolate’. Using this as a broad, illustrative example he got me to think about the world are we stepping into (chocolate), who’s guiding us (Dawn) and what the audience are getting out of it (Secrets). This was great. I could see a pathway to creating the foundation for an evolving, constructive brief that could work on any channel. After a lot of cross checking and beta testing I settled on the topline concept that most of you who have pitched to me will be familiar with: Talent  Take Territory Tone The idea here is not to work up and construct different elements to generate a topline it is to see if your series concept falls down and matches it. This reduced the challenge of idea generation on multiple channels to a manageable amount of factors. Over time throwing a few toplines around would help the prod co understand our Taste. Now it is only when you match the broadcasters Taste that these ideas will start gaining momentum, after all the point of a brief is to match it. As the migration to Internet TV became unstoppable I added some other elements for the second stage of development. Title Tagline Thumbnail The imaginary content universe is infinite, there are any number of idea rabbit holes you can find yourself spiralling down and if you don’t have a foundation to refer back to you can get lost… in space. *Yes, of course there are plenty of other factors which prevent great ideas getting commissioned but this is just designed so you’re not forever working off a blank page and forever finding yourself at dead ends - that really is development hell.

🎓Three things to level up your career. On my way back from MCR.Test meet-up all about levelling up your testing career. It was a great session run by Ken Talbot, Cameron Whitwam, Alex Lowndes, and Steve Chapman and it had an excellent turnout at NBrown. My top three takeaways where 1. 🧠Focus on topics you are interested in. What do you do when your organisation is spread across a lot… like a lot… of areas? The photo of me is at Alexandra Palace from last weekend - a former home of BBC Broadcasts until the 80s… The BBC has a large geographic estate, from local radio and big production centres in all four nations. Partly by need - place resources where they’re are stories for news and all so to create hubs. But as originally posed - what you do? It’s easy when hubs are large and people can move between them - eg London to Manchester. What do you do to a local office with maybe only 10 people? I’ve always loved the BBC in having such a wide range of current/ former locations. How does your organisation manage having many locations - and is there a need driven by the organisations purpose (eg in the BBC’s case)?

I recently commented on one of Martin Zarian's brilliant posts. Martin's post was about a new brand film from Samsung Electronics, created in response to Apple's 'Crushed' Film. One of the main comments Martin made was in relation to how Samsung were so easily and quickly able to craft a film in reaction to their competitors latest film. I seconded this in the comments of the post, saying that Samsung were able to do this because they know their core values, and they know how to communicate this to their customers in an impactful way. One of the comments I received in return was the perfect example of how brand films are able to work on us as viewers, without us realising. The reaction comment said "Didier..., this doesn't show anything about what they (Samsung) stand for... what do they stand for?". This is the beauty of this film. The best brand films don't consciously promote core values, rather they do it subconsciously. Samsung has 5 core values as a brand:  → People  → Excellence → change  → Integrity → Co-prosperity We can see in this film that they show the excellence of people through the woman's performance. 2/5 ticked off. Despite different (changed from the status quo) circumstances, the woman is still able to prosper in the environment and perform to her potential. 4/5. And finally, co-prosperity, a little more harder to communicate in this film... Prosperity comes from being prosperous, which can be linked to success. Co-prosperity is shared prosperity. In this scenario, we can see a hint of this. Samsung are sharing in the success of the woman. Whilst not communicated blatantly in the film, Samsung still communicate their core values in the film, in a subtle manner, that the subconscious brain picks up. This is the beauty of brand films. They engage a viewer in storyline, 'distracting' them from the 'advertisement', yet communicates the brand's message successfully in a subtle manner.

The world of post is changing fast - unlike many in the industry, remote workflows are still absolutely essential although there are clear limitations around what can be done outside the edit suite. AI is here and we feel good about it! It’s allowing post professionals to focus on what’s actually important: creativity and storytelling by taking over menial tasks - no one wants to spend three days blurring number plates.  Mediatech buyers are leaning hard into OPEX models - if they’re not happy with the product (or vendor), SaaS gives them a quick exit. No one wants this but it puts the pressure on vendors to ensure they deliver.  Trust is an essential element of a successful vendor-buyer relationship. What’s in my Kit Bag…?   AirPods - Part 2 In the previous article I basically sang the virtues of a hands-free phone call. Not exactly groundbreaking but in the world of industry specific tech, that simple ‘hack’ had somehow eluded me for years, go figure.   However, here I will cover a slightly more controversial use of these humble earphones – Correspondent IFB.   For those unfamiliar, IFB (Interruptible Fold/Feedback) is the system by which a reporter receives audio from the anchor or director back in the newsroom. Typically, this involves an audio cable connected to an amplifier and fed into an earpiece - think 'Agent Smith.' This setup is designed to be discreet, creating an 'invisible technique' that adds to the mystique of the TV process. However, in recent years, these setups are paradoxically 'disappearing,' replaced by more visible earphones like AirPods. I’m in two minds about this. On one hand, I believe that where possible, 'standards' should be maintained. I prefer the clean look, free of visible gear. I want that 'invisible' technique - it’s part of the craft. It’s how I was trained, and I’ll admit, I’m an old stick in the mud and proud of it. So, when I can, that’s what I go for. But there's no denying that those shiny little earbuds have saved the day on plenty of occasions. Ask any crew about their experience with IFB, and you’ll likely see an eyebrow start to twitch. Mankind has managed to put a man on the moon, but somehow getting clean comms remains a constant challenge. This is where the AirPods can save the day. I can ask MCR to transfer my call to the gallery, and boom - instant IFB. Can we see the earbuds? Yes. Are we now able to go live? Yes. So do we care about seeing the earbuds? No! It’s a great backup to have. This is all great but the most special thing about bluetooth earbuds is: everybody has them… There’s a saying, "The best camera is the one that you have with you," and this rings true for the AirPods. With a combo of my phone, an app, and my buds, I have the means to newsgather, including going live. It won’t always be pretty, but with these bits of kit, I have a basic ENG rig that fits in my pocket! This is quite something. Not only am I always ready to metaphorically leap into action (a double-edged sword, to be sure), but it also allows the team to operate in places where we might not be so welcome. The AirPods not only provide IFB but also act as a microphone. Once again, this isn’t an ideal setup, but it can and does work when we're in a bind. All in all these stylish little earphones pack in a lot of utility and if need be can even be used to listen to music, rightly earning their place in my kit bag. Do you use your earbuds creatively? "Breaking News Accent" Voice Acting Challenge When asked to deliver a particular accent or character for a script, as much as possible "try" to make it your own and an original rather than do an impression of something (or someone) that is familiar, because when you take that latter route, you lose your original take of the script and focus on how "it should be done". #voiceover #voiceoverartist #voiceactor
