In 2023 and in 2024, positively so far, a vast majority of my mandates have been at the Director, Partner and Managing Director level. These appointments, from feedback, have already had a positive commercial impact on the firms they have joined. What I feel this highlights, particularity during a period of uncertainty, globally, is that strategic communications and high-level government relations is rising in importance in the corporate food chain. There seems to be some serious appetite for solid strategic advice. It was recently found, via research by Deloitte in late 2023, that nearly 70% of Corporate Affairs Directors report directly into the CEO. If performed well, it can build trust with key investors, policy makers and stakeholders (both public and private). Looking back, there is one common theme in all my appointments: they all had an incredibly solid network, track record of success, were very commercial in mindset - understood that getting to work on the 'complex' work that everyone enjoys only comes from actually winning the business in the first place - and still enjoy doing the day to day work for clients. In an era where technological advances are progressing at a seriously astronomical rate, I really do feel there is far less room for a consultant who is sitting at the desk completing tasks which could, in the months ahead, be completed in a matter of minutes. So, juniors, and seniors, network as much as possible and really show your extra added value to your businesses and build that layer of trust with your partners. You never know how much of an impact one conversation could have on your career and where it could take you. That working in true partnership piece is certainly one of the top reasons why I love this space. Importantly, I believe we can all agree, businesses need a variety of individuals with various emotional tendencies, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds; this is critical in diversity of thought and output for clients, but one element that cannot be put to one side is meeting with individuals face to face and building that layer of trust and togetherness. This is something I do believe technology cannot ever replace. So, if you are over the £100,000 mark consultancy side and solely count on incoming RFP's from your current firm, this is where things shall become far more difficult for you in the years to come. If you are a mid-senior in the corporate affairs, policy, financial communications landscape or a business looking to grow in new markets that may like some guidance then I would love to speak with you.

Some interesting thoughts shared by the panel at the latest "Role of the #NED in..." series run by Transpire - Global Director Network this lunchtime - with the focus this time on the #US. 💰 Remuneration: 50-60% of the compensation package comprises shares which is reflective of the different philosophies of who the board is there to serve: stakeholders more generally or shareholders more specifically. 👔 Formality: whilst there are undoubtedly significant variations, US board conversations can be more free-flowing and informal within the agenda. ⚖️ Litigation: expect a listed company to be sued every time there is a major transaction! (That doesn't mean the litigants will win). ⚠️ Do your due diligence before joining a board: litigation possibilities, SEC filings, activist investors... ensure you understand both the federal and state laws applicable (mostly Delaware, Californian governance much more stringent), read up on "Revlon duties". 🛠️ Desirable NED skillset: like the UK, Finance is still very valuable. US boards are building out Cyber, Board Security and Compliance but ESG diminishing (well-publicised withdrawal of ESG 'push' from Blackrock one factor). US experience, political understanding or connections. 🔍 Finding a NED role: as with all jurisdictions, network, network, network! Also contact search firms, advisory firm connections, ensure you have an up-to-date LinkedIn and consider joining associations such as NACD (National Association of Corporate Directors), Women Corporate Directors (WCD) and FEI | Financial Executives International. Sillion's Annual Investor Sustainability Report has just been published! I've been here all of about 5 minutes, so I can take absolutely zero credit for it, but it's a brilliant source of insight into what investors want to see from corporates from a sustainability disclosure, reporting and communications perspective. I found the insights around "greenhushing" especially interesting. It's becoming much more prevalent and is perceived as slowing progress in some sectors. Meanwhile, checks and balances for greenwashing are becoming more commonplace.

Linking ESG goals to executive pay ⚖️ The case for tying CEOs’ rewards to the attainment of environmental, social and governance goals has gained momentum over recent years, but the practicalities of doing this effectively are far from straightforward. By 2022, more than 90 of the FTSE 100 were incorporating ESG measures into their executive incentive plans, according to a Deloitte study. Like most things ESG-related, the practice has encountered scepticism. Many view such financial incentives as high-ranking individuals profiting from addressing global problems, that their businesses have contributed to or as simply a means to sneak inflated compensation packages into the C-suite. However, others argue that when done well and in the right context, the compensation model reinforces executive accountability to meet ESG targets. The main challenge lies in the practicalities of getting it right. The main risk is that the practice could result in lip service' ESG measures that aren't well thought through but increase pay....tree planting anyone ;) ? Fascinating to hear from Rachel Kyte, UK Special Representative for Climate, ahead of COP29, at The Conduit Green Economy Forum yesterday. Asked what she would like to see in terms of outcomes from Baku, she said finance is the golden thread. In particular, she said an agreement on Article 6 and developing high integrity carbon markets would be an important tool in helping much needed investment flows into emerging economies. She also highlighted the challenge of agreeing The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), saying we cannot continue the same levels of constructive ambiguity. We need to decide on who contributes, how much, and who can take what out. She also said to expect to hear Ed Miliband and Keir Starmer speak at COP29 about how UK climate technologies and financial innovation can be put to positive catalytic use in the rest of the world. Following Trump’s win in the US she had an interesting insight on the need for people to feel the positive impacts of climate policy. Saying that despite its huge ambition, the challenge with the Inflation Reduction Act is that the average American family has not yet felt the benefits as they are still feeding through to everyday life. On a lighter note, when asked about what conversation she would like to see organisations starting in the Green Zone at the COP, she replied “where is the good coffee.” Impact & Influence will be on the ground in Baku and I’m sure Rishi Bhattacharya will identify with that! #COP29 #sustainablefinance #climatechange

What does it mean to be a Non-Executive Director nowadays? When to start thinking about this career path? I found this insight from our UK colleagues, Board Practice, very interesting. So many people think about the best way to combine executive and non-executive roles. The good thing is that they might be very complementary, with a strong value to build on both sides: "My executive role in the private sector allows our team to move faster on initiatives and this is something which I bring to my non-executive role, where traditionally businesses move slower. Fascinating article about the significant disparity in executive compensation between the UK and the US. On average, UK executives are paid significantly less than their American counterparts, which poses a risk of talent migration from Britain to the United States. Could this gap in pay undermine the competitiveness of the UK's capital markets and its ability to retain top executive talent? There has been much conversation about 'Quiet Quitting' in recent years, but have you seen the data? There is some really insightful info here from McKinsey & Company. Some common themes recently from our clients include: 📈 Ongoing focus on employee engagement, talent management & mobility, and reward calibration 🤝 Most firms are still proactively making key hires, often approaching passive talent, and being open to the right package to secure talent for their business.
