If St Patrick had a jet… What would it be? We know it'd be green. But which model would it be? He’d definitely need lots of range to get to all the Christian missionaries around the world. So, I'm thinking a Gulfstream, a Bombardier or a Dassault. Or maybe even a Boeing Business Jet (BBJ) or an Airbus Corporate Jet (ACJ). He’s a big deal. I think he’d be a Gulfstream guy. FACT: Today is National Aviation Day in honor of Orville Wright's birthday. CONTROVERSY: There has been some debate on which state is worthy of the title "First in Flight". For those who call North Carolina home (such as myself) there may be some bias since the title is due to the legendary 12 second flight on Dec. 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. However, Wilbur and Orville spent most of their lives in Dayton, Ohio, where their outlandish idea of human flight were manifested into reality. It was there where those dreams turned to sweat that brought us to where we are today. QUESTION: I'm curious to hear from those who have a passion for aviation - past, present, and future - What state do you believe is most deserving of the title "First in Flight"? Today many may take these amazing machines for granted thanks to the wild ideas of those Wright Brothers. What also may be taken for granted is the crew members needed to operate these jets safely everyday. Do not settle for having "enough to get by" in your flight department. As the sun sets on my first season on the Red Arrows, this isn't just an opportunity to share some of my favourite sun set pictures - but also to reflect on a question I've been asked countless times; what's the best thing about your job? The answer is simple; people. The reason why is also simple. Unlike many military organisations, every person on the Red Arrows has applied to be there. This means they are all invested in, and passionate about, the output. This makes being a leader a pleasure and a privilege. ♦️ 100% availability of a 9-ship to every single UK, European and Canadian air show, and official flypast, of the 60th Diamond Season. 🍁 Transiting twelve aircraft across the Atlantic, through 4 countries, across 12 locations, spanning 6-weeks, and arriving back on time - as part of the MAPLE HAWK tour. Individually these are incredible achievements. Together they are immense. On top of this, all of the above, the intense training for 6 months in advance, and much more, was achieved in the same year as the 50th anniversary of the Hawk T1 aircraft that we use. The oldest aircraft still serving the team entered service in 1977 and they no longer make spare parts. More than ever, what this year has demonstrated to me is how a cohesive team can be greater than the sum of its parts - and how important motivation, a clear mission and a shared vision is to delivering phenomenal results. So why this post? 1. A cheap excuse to share some of my favourite photos. 🌅 2. In a world where the increasing benefit of AI is pushed upon us, I find it important to remember what endures throughout. It is not the achievements of technology that define us, but the achievements of people. 👥👥👥

I recently visited the ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace trade fair & air show in Berlin! 🛫 After spending some exiting and insightful days there with various presentations, panel discussions and booth visits, I wanted to share my high-level summary of some key insights I took home with me: ⛽ SAF remains a crucial medium-term solution, while there is no single solution in sight for hydrogen. 👨✈️ Addressing non-CO2 emissions is critical and being worked on and optimizing ATC routing (“best equipped, best served”) could aid in significantly reducing emissions. 🌬 The gas turbine remains the primary propulsion system for the time to come and innovation is possible with sustainable cabin materials. 🚁 R&D is happening on innovative use cases such as a mobile runway system for drones and propulsion systems for intercity and intracity commuter aircraft. 🌿 Aircraft OEMs are making progress in reducing emissions, e.g., with Embraer aiming for 100% SAF compatibility by the end of the decade. Did anybody manage to get over to Southport for the airshow this weekend? Anybody going to Farnborough? What about RIAT? Our CEO Jerrod Hartley has featured in the Aerospace Magazine Farnborough Edition, and it's well worth a read if you have a bit of time, and although he won't be in personal attendance at Farnborough, he will be down in Fairford for the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT 2024) at the end of the week. https://lnkd.in/ek-UQhJK An airshow is a great opportunity to stand back and appreciate why we do what we do. Seeing these great machines in action is impressive, but also an opportunity for reflection. It wasn't really that long ago since Wilbur and Orville Wright created the first successful heavier than air flying machine, the Wright Flyer, in 1903, where it achieved a powered flight of 59 seconds covering a distance of 259 metres. It's incredible how far we've come in a relatively short space of time, with modern aircraft with incredible safety and performance profiles. Take the Eurofighter Typhoon for example, which entered service way back in 2003, with some mightily impressive stats: Top speed - Mach 2.0 (approx. 1,550 mph) Ceiling - 55,000 feet Climb Rate - 0 to 36,000 feet in under 90 seconds Acceleration - subsonic to Mach 1.5 in under 30 seconds Thrust - 40,000 lb (equivalent to the weight of over 13 VW Golfs) So, here's to all the hard work, dedication, creative thinking, and human ingenuity that have driven our progress over the past several hundred years. Let's also toast to the future, where we will continue to push boundaries and overcome new challenges with the same dedication and vigour.
