I've been working with Moverly recently and their incredible team including Gemma Young and Ed Molyneux to add my AI and tech experience as a relatively small cog in the incredible tech that they're creating. And, as this piece from Gemma Young shows, the technology (as brilliant as it is) can only get us so far. LATE PAYMENTS: New "Code" being introduced. New package of measures aimed at tackling scourge of late payments. A brand new unenforceable non-statutory code is being introduced by the Government, with a different name to the last unenforceable non-statutory code introduced before - you know, the one that is ignored because it is not statutory. My daughter is 9 years old. She loves getting stickers at school and those badges at brownies. Businesses need more than brownie badges and stickers. If a business is worried about cashflow, then (a) get payment up front, or (b) adjust pricing and factor the invoices, and (c) do your due-diligence on firms before working with them. Or (d) Do a small piece of work first, to check if they will pay. There are other things that businesses need to help grow the economy. I'll refrain from mentioning the obvious. #latepayment

I'm old. there's no escaping it. but I do embrace technology and use lots of apps to enhance the service I give. but I'm gonna have a moan. I just don't get diary apps. I find being pointed to the internet to make an appt to speak to someone completely impersonal. even dismissive. where's the rapport building in organising a meeting with a potential new supplier? or client? I've been using an electronic diary since my BlackBerry. discussing potential appointment dates is part of the journey. how many are missing appointments with potential new clients by pointing them elsewhere to book some time in your diary? I'd love to know how those of you using these diaries find it? (also, why is linked in the only app that doesn't allow my keyboard to default to caps lock when streaming a new sentence 🤣)

Has the killer app for Open Banking just got one step closer? The Payment Systems Regulator has just announced plans to expand Variable Recurring Payments (VRPs). VRP's have long been touted as the successor to the UK's incredibly successful Direct Debit payments, however their rollout has been met with a number of challenges. We're not there yet but this statement from the PSR is very encouraging. 1️⃣ Beyond Sweeping: We've moving from "me-to-me" payments to using VRP for recurring payments for utilities, government services, and subscriptions. 2️⃣ Widening Participation: The mandation of participation for the 9 largest banks and building societies in the intiial rolloutof Open Banking was crucial to getting the ball rolling. Many non-mandated FIs quickly followed suit but the PSR is supportive of widening the mandate to ensure broad adoption. 3️⃣ Pricing Models Under Scrutiny: The debate on API access pricing continues. Will we see a centralised approach, or will the market decide? 4️⃣ Liability and Consumer Protection: The industry is still grappling with these issues. The PSR's approach here could make or break VRP adoption. The real-time nature of OB VRP's will open new fraud vectors for scammers to exploit. 5️⃣ User Experience is Key: Remember, over 65% of users abandon complex checkouts and this has been a barrier to adoption of existing OB payments. VRPs promise simplicity - but can they deliver? A sneak peek into ‘how & what’ they implemented 👇 Background: Monzo Bank is an amazing Digital Bank! 🌞 🛠️ (a) Architecture They adopted a cloud-native approach, leveraging AWS Cloud and Kubernetes for infrastructure orchestration. They welcomed microservices architecture using Cassandra as the core database and communicating between services through RPC (initially RabbitMQ, later HTTP). Services were isolated, each managing its data and exposing Protobuf interfaces for communication. (The Image gives an idea about Monzo’s Microservices Architecture Flow) 🛠️ (b) Transition from Monolith to Microservices: Monzo initially adopted microservices, building services for core banking functions like ledgers, accounts, and authentication. They defined clear boundaries between services, each managing its data and communicating through RPC interfaces. This approach enabled an incremental transition from a monolithic architecture by adding new services while maintaining a consistent microservices-based architecture. 🛠️ (c) Scaling the Digital Bank: Their architectural choices, such as using Cassandra, Kubernetes, and microservices, enabled them to scale to over 300 engineers, 2500 microservices, and hundreds of daily deployments, even on Fridays. The isolation of services and data allowed for independent scaling and ownership changes. Uniformity in service development, through shared libraries and best practices, facilitated maintaining and scaling the codebase. To ensure operational excellence, Monzo invested heavily in observability tools like: ▪️ Grafana for visualization, ▪️ Jaeger for distributed tracing, ▪️ Prometheus for metrics collection, ▪️ OpenTelemetry for instrumentation, ▪️ Elastic search for centralized logging. Making informed technological choices aligned with organizational capabilities helped Monzo maintain consistency and quality as the codebase grew. 💡 Found it useful? I do love a good stat. Of the 654,000 interactions on our live platform last week, 40,800 were over our API. If your supplier doesn't offer open APIs included in the base product, and you're thinking "meh maybe we don't need em" then you are stuck in legacy la la land. API's bring the efficiency and interaction products need in a modern adaptive platform. That 1992 CSV FTP Ping Pong you are pretending works fine will bite you on the behind one day.
