The UK has just reached 60,000 electric vehicle (EV) public charging points. It's only 6 months since the 50,000 milestone was reached which shows the growth in infrastructure. Statistics compiled by digital platform and app Zapmap show the overall rate of installation in the first four months of 2024 has increased by almost 37% compared with the average across 2023. The 60,000 figure is made up of several different types of EV chargers for a range of needs including en-route charging for longer journeys, destination charge points, and lower-powered charge points on residential streets for EV drivers unable to have a home charge point installed.   Melanie Shufflebotham, Co-founder & COO at Zapmap, said: "Hitting 60,000 public charging devices is an extremely significant milestone for electric car drivers across the country. "This is really just the crest of the wave. There’s a real momentum behind the increased rate of charge point installations up and down the country. "Without a doubt, it is great news for electric car drivers that not only the sheer number but also the variety of charging options are improving every month." Britain’s public charging network is facing criticism for high costs, making electric vehicle (EV) driving potentially twice as expensive as using petrol or diesel cars. The UK now has over 12,500 rapid and ultra-rapid charging stations, a 40% increase from last year. Data shared with The Times shows that these chargers cost an average of 80p per kilowatt hour (kWh), which makes it difficult for people without access to cheaper home and workplace charging options to switch to EVs. 🚗 Big rise in public EV charging by business drivers reported by Allstar 🚗 The use of public EV charging facilities by UK businesses has soared in a year, according to data from Allstar. The company has published its second AllCosts report, based on data from its customers’ charging sessions between January and March this year. It revealed public EV charger use was up by 264% compared with March 2023. In addition, the number of business drivers using home charging rose by 113%.
