I've seen a lot of discussion about how the retail EV share of the new car market is better than the official SMMT figures suggest because consumers are using salary sacrifice schemes to buy EVs. However, if that was the case, I think you'd expect the fleet/business share of EV registrations to be even higher.

In the UK, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is reporting the new LCV market is up by 4.5% with some 177,620 new vans, pickups and 4x4s registered in 2024, the best performance since 2021. This is despite new LCV sales down 4.5% in June. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, commented: "The best first half of a year since 2021 is great news for a market so intrinsic to economic growth, but this optimism will only continue if action is taken to re-energise zero emission van demand. A new government provides an opportunity to bolster the market with a strategy to grow the UK’s van-specific charging network at pace and maintain essential fiscal incentives to keep this vital market on track, without which our net zero ambitions will be at risk".

🚚 Fleets being pushed to take electric vans due to ZEV mandate, AFP reports 🚚 Order quotas for electric vans are being imposed by manufacturers looking to meet the UK’s ZEV mandate, causing potential problems for operators, according to the Association of Fleet Professionals (AFP). Under the mandate, a certain proportion of vans sold by each manufacturer must be zero-emission. The AFP said that several major manufacturers were insisting that a proportion of all orders must now be for EVs, in order to reflect this. AFP chair Paul Hollick said: “The problem is that some fleets just don’t have a role for these electric vans within their business." Just back from The Commercial Vehicle Show, and what a day it was! The industry has come a long way, and it was great to hear from OEMs that LCV supply is back to normal and there are vans on the ground. Let's leave the past behind us and start to really progress with the transition to EVs. The key takeaway from the event was the importance of getting "bums in seats" (pardon the industry slang). Fleet decision-makers and drivers need to experience the benefits of EVs firsthand to really drive the transition forward. Not only do EVs reduce driver stress, but they also make motoring more simple. Of course, there are still some hurdles to overcome, particularly when it comes to charging infrastructure. But as an industry, we need to unite and find solutions. Shared charging, with planning, can help fleets meet their energy requirements. It was a good day representing Gofor with have loads to share with the team. Let's keep pushing forward towards a more sustainable future for the commercial vehicle industry. #EV #LCV #decarbonisation

Very interesting to see that more than half of commercial drivers now believe that electric van operating costs would be lower than petrol or diesel equivalents. The new study, by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK, also showed that two-thirds of UK van drivers say an EV would suit their day to day business needs 🚛🔋 This study supports the fact that transitioning to EV can help fleets save money by reducing operating costs.
