Traditional banks' loss appears to be the SaaS sector's gain. New research from Adyen and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals the embedded finance market has surged to US$185 billion - yet this represents less than 20% of the total opportunity. The findings paint a compelling picture: leading platforms are now generating over half their revenue from financial products, with the potential to multiply returns 3-4x. "SaaS platforms deepen user relationships and unlock new revenue streams by addressing SMBs' overlooked financial needs," explains Blake Breathitt, SVP at Adyen. Perhaps most striking is the shift in small business behaviour. BCG's Stefan Dab notes "an appetite from SMBs to consume a broader range of financial services from within their SaaS platforms," with half of the 2,000 surveyed businesses ready to embrace comprehensive financial offerings through their software providers. Shifting gears wasn't just a career change for Dominic—it also involved relocating from Scotland to Asia. “I had to accept taking a step backwards to start over. I was three years into law, which is equivalent to an intermediate-level lawyer pushing towards seniority. To get hired as a software engineer, I had to accept that I’d start over from the graduate level. Making a change in career and location at the same time was challenging, but a lot of the motivation came from the self-respect and satisfaction of having made this choice as my own. I remember one of my friends asking me, why are you doing this? Capital One is teaming up with #fintech giants Stripe and Adyen to offer a free product aimed at #frauddetection. They have built an #opensource project, called Direct Data Share, which is an #API that allows #merchants or anyone in the #payment stack to send real-time #ecommerce transaction data and act like a data clearinghouse, identifying #fraud across all of their rails. Throwback from our panel at Innovate Finance's IFGS with Myles Stephenson (Modulr) and Samina Hussain-Letch (Block) on the Future of payments in the UK. 𝐈𝐬 𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐔𝐊 𝐩𝐚𝐲𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝? The consensus answer was yes, but with certain nuances — some of my takeaways from the discussion below. Payments are systemic infrastructure, like energy, railways, etc. To reap the benefits, investment needs to be long-term and consistent. All payments should eventually move to real-time, with marginal processing costs trending toward zero. A vision should allow for improved coordination between the different UK agencies regulating payments so that they all move in the same direction. Lastly, the UK has been a trailblazer in many areas, such as open banking, debit cards, and scheme access. However, those initiatives haven’t been fully realised yet.
