Google's annual Year in Search lookback is more than just a list of popular terms; it’s a reflection of global and local trends, offering insight into what people care about at any given moment. With more than 2 billion people using Google search billions of times each day, it’s an invaluable resource for understanding the collective consciousness. People everywhere turned to Google to find timely information on the big themes in 2024: from major political events like elections, to sporting events like the Olympics and Paralympics, the UEFA European Football Championship, and the T20 World Cup which united fans in multiple countries. Also fascinating — and where I find myself gleaning so much — are the trending topics on Google Search that reflect hyper-local trends, from: 🇦🇺 Australia’s love for Connections (the New York Times’ popular word puzzle)  🇯🇵 Japan’s keen interest in the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team thanks to MVP Shohei Ohtani 🇰🇷 South Korea’s interest in a housing support program  🇳🇿 a rekindled debate in New Zealand about where their beloved ‘flat white’ was invented…  🇻🇳 …while in Vietnam, pearl milk tea was top of mind. These are rich insights that help us understand the world around us better.
