Audience first SEO - great talk at last nights Northampton The Marketing Meetup. Key takeaways for all marketers 👇 1. Put the customer back into all your marketing planning. Great example from the world of SEO, where keyword platforms and algo hacks have overshadowed considering what customers want, feel and need. 2. Know your customer (and prospects). What is there intent at key stages and why did they decide to use you? What could you do better to meet their needs? This insight can then drive all your planning. And the overlaps that occur e.g. a content plan which feeds (and is feed) from SEO, which drives email subject lines and content promotion.... and round we go. 3. Fish where the fish are. Show up where your customers and prospects will see you. And be creative in your solutions here. What forums, Facebook groups and events do they use to find and solve the problems they have (which your service can solve) 4. Be helpful to establish trust and authority first, before you start 'selling.' Great talk Harry Evans - both inspirational and really well delivered. Thoroughly enjoyed day 1 of the ABTA Conferences and Events Travel Marketing Conference on the amazing top floor of the News UK HQ. I like to stare out the window when I’m concentrating (much to some people’s confusion) and so the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral is now synonymous with travel marketing best practice......I challenge you to find that sentence anywhere else on the internet. A big highlight was hearing from Kantar about the buoyancy of the UK travel market (particularly cruise…pun intended) and the reassertion that the return to mild optimism of overall consumer confidence is being mirrored in people booking more holidays, with overseas holidays on a steep upward trajectory in ’24 after the dip of the last few years. Indeed, even among those who feel less confident about their financial position, the number of people not taking a holiday this year is down from 2023 and a third of people say they’ll book more trips this year than in ’23 (with c. 50% saying they’ll go away as often as they did last year). And people are booking more often throughout the year, particularly those whose customers fit an older demographic and can “fly off on a whim”, presenting an incremental opportunity to invest in the right paid media outside of seasonal peaks. We also heard that all-inclusive holidays are a popular way for people to control spend whilst on holiday, particularly those with families, which is good news for travel brands that offer all-inclusive or tailored holidays in particular. My main takeaway was a panel discussion that got on to the importance of trust. While UK households refuse to compromise on their holiday(s!), living is more expensive and people want guaranteed value, or as close as they can get to it. This can be achieved first and foremost by selling on and then, crucially, delivering on experience as we in the travel sector are selling memories at the end of the day! This drives referals but marketers can also leverage content and channels (erherm…direct mail) that create emotional engagement and build strong brand association.  The Times talked about the importance of quality journalism. I know I put quite a lot of stock in the broadsheets’ “top 10s” and the like. ABTA and ATOL accreditations were also discussed as important in building trust. A year ago I came to this event and knew nobody. Roll forward a year and I was excited to see so many familiar faces, many of which are now clients, and make some great new connections too.  Roll on day 2.

How will OpenAI’s release of SearchGPT impact the world of SEO? From my research there seems to be a shift away from keywords to intent, meaning contextual relevance could become more important than keyword optimisation. This will mean producing high quality content. It could also change how people search for information, with people selecting SearchGPT over Google (avoiding ads). CAPACITY VS. CAPABILITY Antonia Wade bought up an interesting topic in her recent (very good) interview with Jon Evans. On the topic of brand marketers using agencies - she said some buy in capacity and some buy in capability. It might sound obvious - but it’s a really important point and something I think both Agencies and Client-side B2B marketers don’t think enough about. Are you fixing a capacity or a capability problem? For Agencies - this means you need to really think about your positioning. How are you actually helping? Both are fine but you need to be clear. As Chris Wilson used to say - are you a ‘think for me’ or ‘do for me’ agency? For Brand Marketers - what is it you’re actually expecting from your agency and are you sure you’re on the same page? I’ve seen all too many times marketers saying they want the thinking but actually want the doing. They had a capacity not capability issue. I think this was summed up nicely recently by a desiger who said ‘I don’t know if I’m being used to give me design opinion or because the client just can’t use illustrator’
