This CIBSE journal article covers how Naomi Grint applied principles of the heat pump readiness framework developed by Laurence Childs to Cornwall's housing stock to understand what proportion of homes are likely to be heat pump ready. Housing 2024 - Decarbonising Energy Systems I was up in Manchester at the Housing 2024 event where I was part of a panel with Cllr Anna Railton, cabinet member for zero carbon oxford and climate justice, Oxford City Council, Tom Woolley, smart product and strategy director, Metis, chaired by Andy Cameron-Smith, editorial director, Unlock Net Zero. We shared some insights on how a decarbonised energy system will open the path to the full decarbonisation of other sectors including housing. What was also interesting is how do we create the energy systems and infrastructure change required now for us to create better homes for the future? Another key question is how do we enable a national delivery programme focused on both energy demand and supply? The role of smart microgrids transforming the future of home energy for communities was also covered. These are significant challenges but also represent significant opportunities in the role of Local Area Energy Planning, Heat Network Zoning and as an Enabler, Net Zero Data Assets, Innovation and Commercial Models to attract the required financing.

I can't emphasise enough how valuable the Green Open Homes approach is to normalising low carbon heating and home energy retrofit. Seeing installation in your neighbours homes and being able to discuss the process and ask questions informally helps build trust and confidence. At one point we had government funding for communities to deliver these Green Open Homes events across the whole of the UK. With the scale up in home energy retrofit needed across the UK we ought to be building this approach into all local energy decarbonisation programmes.

Ahead of this weekend’s G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment, Green Building Councils (GBCs) representing G7 countries have joined us in signing an open letter to Climate Ministers. The letter stresses the importance of buildings as a solution to deliver a decarbonised, resilient, and equitable future. As the largest contributing sector to carbon emissions, we have an opportunity to exploit existing climate solutions from the built environment, but we need heightened political ambition from G7 leaders. GBCs stand ready and committed to working with governments to implement existing solutions that will drive demand for a systemic transformation of the building sector, and deliver the Paris Agreement goals.
