£1 Billion Low-Carbon Heat Network Planned to Transform Westminster’s Iconic Landmarks A £1 billion heat network initiative has been launched in Westminster to deliver low-carbon heating to some of London's most iconic buildings. This ambitious scheme aims to tap into unique heat sources, such as the London Underground, the River Thames, and even "heat barges" transporting thermal energy from nearby power stations stored in thermal batteries. Led by developers Hemiko and Vital Energi Utilities Limited the Swan Partnership has pledged investments of £100 million within three years, scaling to £500 million by 2033 and £1 billion by 2050, aiming to establish one of the largest heat networks in the UK. https://lnkd.in/eyYQdFJj #Investment #Policy #CleanTech #GreenEnergy #UK #WestminsterHeatNetwork #LowCarbonHeating #GreenBuildings #LondonEnergyInitiative #RenewableHeat #SustainableTech #EnergyPolicy #EcoFriendlyUK #CleanEnergyInvestment #GreenBuildingSolutions

Here is a quick read for those working on the decarbonization of urban environments. This ambitious project seeks to reduce the building CO2 emissions of a large London neighbourhood by up to 92%. The key, seemingly, is decentralized heat recovery. It will be very interesting to see the results of this work play out over the coming years.
Plans have been unveiled for the UK’s largest heat network that could supply thousands of businesses and iconic buildings in the heart of London. We have been collaborating with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to develop a trailblazing scheme that could save buildings in Westminster — such as the Houses of Parliament and National Gallery — 92% of CO2 emissions compared to current levels. Heating will be sourced from waste heat generated by the River Thames, London Underground and sewers. This project is one of our biggest and most ambitious undertakings in clean heat for buildings — and has now reached a major milestone with the appointment of Hemiko and Vital Energi Utilities Limited joint venture to invest in and deliver the network. Looking forward to hearing the views of those attending the Herald event this evening looking at the challenges and solutions for rolling out heat networks in Scotland: https://lnkd.in/eKt8yY5S. As this piece highlights, one of the many challenges faced by those looking to develop schemes is the need for public sector bodies to collaborate effectively in the best interests of the places and communities in which they are based. Any form of new, large scale network infrastructure requires this collective buy-in to generate the economies of scale to make schemes viable. It is hoped the forthcoming Heat in Buildings Bill will require public buildings to decarbonise by 2038 and, where available locally, connect to low carbon heat networks. Ideally we see city partnerships leading the alignment of local energy plans across all key public sector bodies to ensure they can maximise the benefits to businesses and households in their communities. #heatnetworks #scotland #districtheating #lowcarbon #netzero

🌍 Happy Earth Day 🌍 Did you know that the main source of emissions from residential buildings is the use of natural gas for heating and cooking? Residential Buildings contribute 20% of the total UK emissions 2nd only to domestic transport (29%) Emissions from residential buildings are estimated to have been 51.7 MtCO2e in 2023, a decrease of 7.2% (4.0 MtCO2e) on 2022. We're moving in the right direction although more needs to be done to decarbonise the way we heat our homes! Kensa Contracting can support Social Housing and New Build in decarbonising heating and hot water through Networked Ground Source Heat Pumps. Some great examples of this can be found at https://lnkd.in/eFNbnD_8. #earthday #netzero #renewableenergy #CleanFuture

Heat networks distribute heat generated in a centralised location via a network of insulated, water filled pipes to domestic and commercial buildings for space heating and hot water. Heat networks can be supplied with heat from a variety of sources, including low carbon sources and heat captured from processes that would otherwise be wasted. The heating sector in the UK accounts for almost one third of the UK's annual carbon emissions. For the #UK to reach net zero by 2050, heat networks need to grow from supplying 3% of the UK's heating to 20%. This means rapid, at scale growth of this tried and tested technology, which has been heating homes in #Europe for more than 100 years. Scotland's New Build Heat Standard (NBHS) requires all new buildings constructed under a warrant applied for from April 1, 2024, to use zero direct emissions heating systems (ZDEHS). ZDEHS include options such as heat pumps and solar thermal systems. This is a crucial step towards achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045! 🌱🌞 The NBHS applies to all new buildings constructed under warrants applied for from April 1 and includes some conversions. Exceptions exist for existing warrants and certain industrial, emergency, and frost protection heating. This new Standard promotes sustainable heating, and increased energy efficiency for residential and commercial buildings. Developers need to adapt to ZDEH systems, considering costs, standards, and supply chain impacts. 🌱 Scotland's dedication to decarbonization sets an example for future developments. 🌎💚 Full article is available here. https://lnkd.in/e7yGrnmK #Dentonsrealestate #NetZero #ClimateAction #Sustainability #Scotland #GreenFuture #Decarbonization

Heat networks steaming ahead 🌍 The UK Government recently announced six new "heat network pilot zones" in Leeds, Plymouth, Bristol, Sheffield, Stockport, and two areas in London. All new buildings in these zones must be designed to connect to heat networks, with the government allocating £5.8m in support. This supports the wider, ambitious, central government drive to deliver £20bn of investment by 2030 – matching the existing drive for change that already exists in the cities and regions it targets (£1bn recently announced for Westminster, £80m for Plymouth etc.). From our recent experience in supporting major offtakers on heat networks in Bradford and other cities, the appetite for change and low carbon heat solutions is definitely there. Exciting (and busy) times ahead! https://lnkd.in/e5hv6cK7 #Sustainability #GreenEnergy #HeatNetworks #UKInnovation Nick Helm, Melanie Grimshaw, Freddie Brock, Jimmy Stafford

Check out the video on the Scottish proposal to addressing poorly performing buildings…absolute targets not relative targets and more… Consultation on the proposed Scottish equivalent to Passive House and implementation of new uplifted standards: https://lnkd.in/gJWmjCQJ Embodied Carbon was mentioned as out of scope of these building regulations as being worked as part of other new building regulations…really interested if you know or there are targets being set for embodied carbon, please add in the comments below. Thanks. Plus, are there proposals to include use or onsite renewables like PH+ and PH Premium as part of any Scottish building regulations under development…super keen to read about these if that’s also happening. Thanks again. And any work underway on retrofit standards for Scottish buildings? Cheers. In the meantime, check out the video on the PassivHaus Trust website, link is again: https://lnkd.in/gJWmjCQJ
