Getting ready to launch tickets is never not nerve-wracking. You can do all the market research and demand gauging but ultimately there are some factors beyond your control, including ... a cost of living crisis. In 2023 when we launched Social Media Conference Cymru we had no idea if there was even demand for a social media conference in Wales, but we had an idea that we ferociously believed in and we were passionate enough to take the risk. As it turned out, Earlybird tickets sold out in a day and all tickets were snapped up in 6 weeks - which meant we were a big warm community of 280 at the Principality Stadium in September, the home of the first Social Media Conference Cymru. Witnessing the audience furiously taking notes, engaging in discussions and forging meaningful new connections filled me with pride. That's what these events are all about - soaking up knowledge, igniting inspiration, and connecting with others who share similar experiences and challenges. This year, there are a few changes and improvements... not least, a new (and bigger) venue, a production team and (you heard it here first) breakout rooms and additional sessions. With all this comes extra costs. It's not a cheap event to put on, I'll say that much! What's the no 1 quality you should look for in a PR agency? ✨ Curiosity ✨ I recently got told a story by someone works in marketing at a luxury greenhouse company that made me cringe. They'd just appointed a new PR agency who came to their showroom for a look around (subtext: obviously the idea wasn't *just* to look around). The girls gazed in awe at the lovely greenhouses yet asked not one question the entire time, even when they were invited to do so afterwards on email. The marketing person told me it was at this point she realised they'd hired the wrong agency. They didn't last long after that. I mean... 🤦♀️ They could have asked about how sales were going, about new products, interesting or famous customers, or forays into new markets. Who's the longest serving employee, etc etc etc. I guess the lesson is, look out for how many questions the PR asks in the initial call. PR is as much about creating stories as it is going out with them.

‘I designed that… and it’s one of my proudest achievements’ mark whelan said to me as I walked out of the Havas London HQ. There are two things I love about out this… 1. An accomplished (British) leader being ok with saying ‘that’s one of my proudest achievements’. That just doesn’t happen. 2. The proudest achievement being something physical. That you can walk on. Look at. Touch. I wrote a thing about Spatial design making a resurgence recently. And I think a return to ‘physical’ isn’t just a counter movement to all the chat about AI and screens. I think it’s primal. I think humans want to feel things again. I think it’s why Cannes was flooded with humans. And I think it’s why Brands are investing in retail, experiential, events. Either way, if you didn’t know, now you know that Mark designed those cool stairs at Havas… and it’s actually a map of Kings Cross made from used metal from Kings Cross station. Luzz it.
